Job summary

Marks & Spencer Plc is recruiting an Software Engineering Manager for its Platform team to lead the AI Engineering platform, guiding 200+ engineers and 30+ applications across customer-facing and colleague-facing apps. You will shape technical vision, build reusable pipelines, tooling, plugins and frameworks, and contribute code throughout.

The role emphasizes engineering excellence, alignment with technical strategy, people management, and DevOps culture.

Qualifications

• Experience with AI tooling and agentic technologies.
• Proven ability to lead and grow high-performing software teams.
• Strong background in cloud-based platforms and scalable architectures.
• Experience designing and maintaining platform engineering solutions.

Responsibilities

• Accountable for engineering excellence within teams and operations.
• Lead alignment with the overarching technical strategy and collaborate with the wider Technology organisation.
• Act as a platform owner, applying product thinking to enable and empower digital products.
• Collaborate with engineering leadership to think strategically and scale impact.
• Line manage Staff and Senior Engineers, and drive recruitment and retention.
• Act as custodian of OKRs within your hub.
• Support engineering communities to raise the bar and drive strategic alignment.
• When vendors are involved, act as the key technical partner for the platform.
