Job title: Non-Destructive Examination Apprentice

Location: Barrow-in-Furness (Cumbria)

Salary: Starting from £14,527 - £23,493 per annum dependent on age, with annual progression through the scheme duration

What you'll be doing:

• You will join a team of skilled professionals who work across every stage of a submarine's build, getting hands‑on with key structural activities while mastering cutting‑edge inspection methods to keep these vessels safe and ready for the Royal Navy.
• Learning directly from some of the best in the business and receiving on‑the‑job training; you’ll gain world‑class qualifications in Non‑Destructive Testing (NDT) at PCN Level 2 and be trained in essential methods such as Magnetic Testing through a mix of hands‑on experience and specialist training at external facilities.
• Approximately 60% of your time will be spent on practical inspections and 40% on desk‑based tasks such as data management.
• There is even the opportunity to pursue further education, such as an NDT Foundation Degree.

The Submarines Team: Our Submarines business has been safely delivering world‑class submarines to the UK Royal Navy for more than a century. The Astute class will equip the Royal Navy with its largest and most capable generation of attack submarines. We are responsible for the design, build, test and commissioning of these state‑of‑the‑art vessels. In total, seven boats will make up the fleet, each weighing a mighty 7,400 tonnes. Dreadnought is the successor to the Vanguard class of nuclear deterrent submarines; we will deliver four submarines to the Royal Navy, with the first entering service in the early 2030s. Dreadnought is widely considered to be one of the world's most complex engineering challenges.
