Job summary

University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a Main area Communications Operative (Switchboard) Band 3 for a fixed-term/secondment. The role is full-time, 37.5 hours per week, across a 24/7 service with sites at PRH and RSCH in Haywards Heath and Brighton.

You will handle calls, operate computerised communication systems, monitor alarms, and provide helpdesk support while upholding a professional image and delivering excellent customer care.

Qualifications

• GCSE grade C or above – English or equivalent work experience that demonstrates this level.
• Knowledge of Outlook/email and IT skills.
• Knowledge of medical terminology.
• Switchboard/telephone experience.
• Flexible and committed to 24/7/365 shifts.

Responsibilities

• Operate a 24-hour computerised communications system, responding to calls and monitoring alarms.
• Provide helpdesk support and activate emergency procedures when required.
• Promote a professional image to internal and external callers at all times.
• Respond to inquiries from patients, public, GPs, Trust staff, and visitors.
• Work both independently and as part of a team to ensure service continuity.
