Chapel Break Infant School in Norfolk is seeking a compassionate 1:1 Classroom Assistant (SEN) to provide individual support for a pupil with SEMH and ASD. The role is initially fixed term and part-time, 27.5 hours per week, term-time plus 1 week, with start date 2 November 2026 (or ASAP).

Qualifications

  • Experience supporting pupils with SEMH and ASD in a school setting.
  • Patience, empathy and the ability to stay calm in challenging situations.
  • Understanding of autism and strategies for communication, sensory needs and emotional regulation.
  • Physically fit and able to keep pace with a young child during outdoor activities and movement breaks.
  • Flexibility, initiative and a collaborative approach to support.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.

Responsibilities

  • Provide 1:1 support for a pupil with SEMH and ASD for 2–3 days a week; support other days as needed.
  • Build positive relationships to support emotional wellbeing and engagement in learning.
  • Implement personalised strategies to regulate emotions and access the curriculum.
  • Work with the class teacher, SENDCo and external professionals for consistent support.
  • Promote positive behaviour and social interaction; support independence.
  • Support sensory regulation and participate in learning indoors and outdoors.
  • Maintain records and contribute to reviews and meetings as required.
  • Assist across the infant school (reception to year 2) for high SEND needs.
