Young High School is a rural comprehensive high school located four hours southwest of Sydney with 505 students from a diverse background. The Principal will provide educational leadership and strategic direction for whole-school teaching and learning.

The role requires collaboration with partner primary schools, engagement with parents and the community, and applying Aboriginal education policy to improve outcomes. NSW Department of Education offers a structured leadership pathway.

Position Information Young High School is a rural comprehensive high school approximately four hours southwest of Sydney and two hours from Canberra and Wagga Wagga and proudly located on the land of the Wiradjuri people. The school has an enrolment of 505 students from a growing diversity of cultural backgrounds, including 18% Aboriginal students and 5% language backgrounds other than English. In addition, five support classes, provide an inclusive and supportive environment for students with additional needs.

The school is committed to creating an optimal learning environment, based on a vision for continuous improvement and goals for our students, through shifts in thinking and a focus on innovative pedagogy.

The school works closely with the local community, local schools and the Temora Principal Network.

Young High School staff engage students through varied curriculum choices which meet academic, vocational (VET and TVET and School to Work), sporting, social and wellbeing needs of all students.
Specific Selection Criteria Approval to teach. In addition to the general selection criteria,

  1. Evidence of expertise in providing strong, visible and strategic leadership of explicit teaching that drives sustained whole-school academic improvement and a culture of high expectations.

  2. Evidence of impact as an educational leader who designs and leads data and evidence informed professional learning in response to data

  3. Demonstrated evidence to lead and further enhance effective collaborative relationships with partner primary schools.

  4. Demonstrated evidence to provide approachable and visible leadership that strengthens a culture of inclusion and promotes meaningful engagement with parents, staff, and the broader community.
    General Selection Criteria 1. High level educational leadership with the skills to lead and manage a complex public school focused on the delivery of high quality education

  5. Ability to lead and manage rigorous and inclusive whole school teaching and learning programs

  6. High level communication and interpersonal skills with the capacity to build positive relationships and engage all levels of the school and educational community

  7. Ability to lead and manage the development and performance of staff to improve teaching and learning

  8. Ability to plan systems and manage resources effectively and equitably to enhance teaching and learning

  9. Capacity to lead staff in implementing the Department’s Aboriginal education policy and to ensure quality outcomes for Aboriginal people
    Conditions If you have not held a substantive principal position in a NSW Public School at any time in the past five (5) years, you need to have completed the NSW Public School Leadership and Management Credential to be eligible to apply, and you will need to attach a copy of your provisional credential certificate or final credential certificate as part of your application.
    An unconditional full approval to teach is a requirement. If you do not hold a full approval to teach with the NSW Department of Education, you are required to commence the application process at the same time as you apply for this teaching opportunity.

The Crown Employees (Teachers in Schools and Related Employees) Salaries and Conditions Award 2024 details the new principal classification structure based on complexity of schools which commenced in 2016. The classification and remuneration of our school principals is based on school complexity, as measured through each school’s RAM allocation. As part of the ongoing application of the new structure a review of thresholds and outcomes will occur on an annual basis. The principal classification for this school is Principal Level P3 for 2026.
