The KIT (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology) is expanding its geothermal program. The research of the division of Geothermal Energy & Reservoir Technology focuses on scientific and technological challenges of using geothermal energy. Projects are often conducted in an international context, expanding from the local Upper Rhine Graben to South America, with numerous partners from academia and industry worldwide.
Raw materials are crucial to Europe’s economy, forming a strong base for many technologies. Reliable access to critical raw materials is a growing concern globally. Recently, geothermal brines have emerged as a potential resource for raw material extraction. Key questions include the potential and sustainability of these extraction processes.
This research will assess the raw material potential in the Upper Rhine Graben and evaluate extraction technologies in collaboration with industry partners. If viable materials and processes are identified, the next steps involve geochemical laboratory work, leaching experiments, and quantification of mass transfer rates. Finally, data will be used to develop a thermo-hydraulic-chemical reservoir model to evaluate the impact and sustainability of raw material extraction from geothermal brines.
The position is available starting October 2024. We seek a highly motivated scientist capable of integrating into our international team at KIT. The role requires advanced English communication skills and basic German skills. The research combines geochemical laboratory work and numerical modeling. The ideal candidate holds a master’s degree in geosciences or a related field, with an interest in aqueous geochemistry and numerical modeling.
Salary is in category 13 TV-L, depending on professional and personal qualifications.
