Achieving climate neutrality within the next 20 years necessitates an innovation boost for the development of highly efficient, scalable, low-cost, and sustainably produced energy technologies. Polymer materials play a central role in this process. HIPOLE deeply integrates and expands world‑class expertise in polymer chemistry, materials science, high‑throughput experimentation and artificial intelligence with complementary expertise in inorganic/hybrid materials, scalable devices, and advanced characterization.

We are looking for a research associate/PhD student (m/f/d) for our site in Jena, Germany. You will support our young institute with your ideas and expertise from the very beginning and collaborate with researchers worldwide to contribute to the development of a climate‑friendly future. The research focus is sustainable polymer research with polymers for energy applications, working on one of the following thematic areas:

  • Synthesis of redox‑active polymers
  • Polymer‑based thin‑film batteries
  • Polymer‑based redox flow batteries
  • Encapsulation materials for solar cells – synthesis and characterization
  • Polymer additives for perovskite solar cells
  • Assembly and electrochemical characterization of polymer redox flow batteries, polymer‑based thin‑film batteries, and encapsulated solar cells
  • Summary, presentation and publication of the results (in English)

Your Tasks
  • Synthesis and characterization of novel molecules and polymers for use in energy storage and conversion devices (depending on the selected topic area)
  • Assembly and electrochemical characterization of polymer redox flow batteries, polymer‑based thin‑film batteries, and encapsulated solar cells
  • Summary, presentation and publication of the results (in English)
Your Profile
  • Successful master’s degree in chemistry or a comparable field of study – for PhD Student position
  • PhD in polymer chemistry, electrochemistry, or a related field relevant to the chosen topic – for Postdoc position
  • Extensive and proven experience in organic chemistry and/or polymer chemistry
  • Experience with analytical methods for polymer characterization
  • General computer skills, including Windows and Office
  • Very good knowledge of electrochemistry
  • Very good written and spoken English skills
