Overview

We are seeking a highly experienced and technically proficient Principal Software Engineer / Project Lead to lead the development of embedded control systems for our advanced products. This role combines deep expertise in embedded software and control systems with strong project leadership to guide multidisciplinary teams from concept through deployment. We are looking for someone on-site in Erlangen or someone who will be able to travel there on daily basis.

Requirements

• Education: Bachelor's or master's degree in electrical engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
• 7+ years of experience in embedded software development.
• 3+ years in a technical leadership or project lead role.
• System-engineering mindset (SW, HW, FPGA)
• Proven experience in real-time control systems and embedded platforms (e.g., ARM).
• Proficiency in C/C++ for embedded systems.
• Experience with RTOS (e.g. QNX or VxWorks), bare-metal programming, and hardware abstraction layers.
• Hands-on experience in lab testing of prototypes
• Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to mentor junior engineers and foster a collaborative development environment.
• Fluent English and German.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in safety-critical or regulated industries (e.g., automotive, medical, aerospace)
• Experience in FPGA development

Job responsibilities

• Lead the architecture, design, and implementation of embedded control software for real-time and safety-critical software in our medical products
• Translate system-level requirements into robust, scalable, and maintainable embedded solutions.
• Ensure compliance with safety, performance, and regulatory standards (e.g., IEC 62304).
• Define project scope, milestones, and deliverables in collaboration with stakeholders.
• Lead cross-functional teams including software, systems, and test engineers.
• Manage project timelines, risks, and resources to ensure on-time and high-quality delivery.
• Serve as the primary technical interface for internal and external stakeholders.
• Drive best practices in embedded software development, including code reviews, unit testing, and continuous integration.
• Ensure traceability from requirements to implementation and verification.
• Support system integration, validation, and troubleshooting activities.
