The Institute of Geophysics (FB11) at the University of Münster, Germany, is seeking to fill the position of a

commencing on 1 April 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter. We are offering a fixed-term, full-time position for three years. Full-time employees are required to teach 4 hours per week during the semester.

  • Design and execution of large-scale numerical simulations of geophysical turbulence, using highly optimized Fortran (or similar) codes and spectral methods on local /national supercomputing clusters
  • Application areas may include rapidly rotating Rayleigh–Bénard convection in various geometries and boundary conditions, potentially involving phase changes, magnetic fields & other complexities
  • Postprocessing and analysis of large simulation datasets
  • Participation in teaching B.Sc./M.Sc. courses in Theoretical Geophysics (details to be discussed)
  • Presenting research results at leading conferences in the field
  • Publishing research results in leading journals in the field
  • Participating in the mentoring of B.Sc. and M.Sc. students in research projects
  • A graduate degree (i.e., German Diplom and / or master’s degree) in Physics, Geophysics, Applied Mathematics, or a related field is required.
  • PhD in Physics, Geophysics, Applied Mathematics, or a related field is required
  • Knowledge of numerical programming (in languages such as Fortran, C++, Python or similar) is expected
  • Proven experience/publication record in numerical/theoretical geophysical fluid dynamics is required
  • Fluency in written and spoken English is expected
  • Experience with the use spectral numerical techniques for geophysical fluid dynamics is desirable
  • German language skills are desirable but not required
  • Ability to independently survey and stay up to date with the relevant scientific literature
  • Active participation in regular group meetings, sharing research progress is expected
  • Willingness to participate in international collaborations and maintain such collaborations with a high degree of independence is desirable
  • Mot to work independently and effectively within a diverse team and clear communication
