Job description

GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung in Darmstadt operates one of the leading particle accelerators for science. In the next few years, the new FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) one of the world's largest research projects, will be built in international cooperation. GSI and FAIR offer the opportunity to work together in this international environment with a team of employees committed to ensuring each day to conduct world‑class science.

The Experiment Electronics department supports science experiments and projects at GSI/FAIR in all electronics‑related tasks. Our strength is detector readout, data acquisition, data analysis, and the monitoring and control of single detectors, and complex large scale detector systems. We support scientists in planning, implementation and application of novel technologies, including those that go beyond state‑of‑the‑art systems.

To keep pace with the ever‑increasing demand of the experiments for innovative developments, we are looking for an ASIC (Digital) Design Engineer (all genders)

Your tasks
  • Participation on the development of concepts for ASIC based detector readout architectures.
  • Development of mixed‑signal ASICs for the readout of particle detectors in high energy physics in collaboration with the design team.
  • In particular independent and self‑dependent development of digital and mixed signal circuits based on VHDL description.
  • Test and characterization of prototypes in the laboratory.
  • Work in our clean room (Die‑ and Wire Bonding).
  • Support and assistance for our experiment groups.
Your profile
  • Graduate in electronics, physics or equivalent experience.
  • Knowledge and experience with nuclear physics experiments.
  • Very good knowledge in digital electronics and in particular the description in languages like VHDL.
  • Experience in simulation of HDL codes, static timing analysis and usage of tools for netlist synthesis and place & route.
  • Experience in Netlist‑on‑top as well as Schematic‑on‑top design flows.
  • Very good knowledge in electronics testing with state‑of‑the‑art techniques, software and equipment.
  • Willingness to work in a clean room occasionally.
  • Willingness to work alone or as well as in a team on very demanding projects.
  • Interest and patience to learn new methods and techniques on micro electronics or develop them yourself.
  • Good knowledge of the German and English language.

The position is permanent. Salary is equivalent to that for public employees as specified in the collective agreement for public employees (TVöD Bund).

GSI supports the vocational development of women. Therefore, women are especially encouraged to apply for the position.

Handicapped persons will be preferentially considered when equally qualified.

Information about FAIR and GSI is available at www.gsi.de and www.fair‑center.eu.

Application documents
  • A detailed cover letter highlighting your relevant expertise or experience in relation to the job requirements.
  • A complete CV.
  • Certificates/references.
