Perioperative Services at all Hamilton Health Sciences sites provides pre-operative, intra-operative and post-operative care for both adults and children. As a member of the healthcare team, the Nurse Practitioner is responsible for the coordination and evaluation of pain related care as it relates to the Operative and acute pain care journey. The Nurse Practitioner provides pain specific care to meet patients’ needs while working with the multidisciplinary team.
Position Summary
The Nurse Practitioner (NP) will apply specialized knowledge, skills and responsibilities in providing and advancing quality care for the Acute Pain patient population. This includes but is not limited to patients undergoing surgery, or receiving pre / post-operative care, or with a need for ongoing in-patient care related to acute pain.
The NP uses an advanced acute pain knowledge base, physical assessment skills, diagnostic interventions and a holistic perspective to participate in the plan of care for the patient, in collaboration with the patient, the family, physicians and the interdisciplinary team.
The NP directs the development and implementation of basic and advanced educational programs for patients, families, staff, other health professionals and self, guided by concepts from relevant educational theory. The NP will play a significant role in the development of evidence-based practice for the acute pain population. The NP will report to both the Clinical Director – Perioperative support services and The Chief of Interprofessional Practice, and work in collaboration with the Chief of Anesthesia services, for both adult and pediatric populations.
The NP will be available to tutor and mentor nursing and other health professional students as appropriate, and participate in continuing education activities to integrate the role of the NP in the program and academic settings; initiate, participate, and / or lead programs, presentations, publications, evaluations and other system changes to continue the enhancement of interdisciplinary care teams.
Schedule Work Hours
Monday to Friday, Days. Evenings / weekends as needed
Qualifications
1. Current Certification of Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) as a Registered Nurse – Extended Class.
2. Master’s Degree in Nursing
3. Recent (minimum 5 years) clinical experience in pain related nursing. Previous experience with the acute pain patient population is preferred.
4. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of community services and resources
5. Demonstrated excellent leadership, critical thinking, interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal
6. Demonstrated ability to promote professional development
7. Demonstrated leadership in continuous quality improvement initiatives
8. Demonstrated commitment to patient and family-centered care
9. Demonstrated ability for independent action, initiative, problem-solving, organization and prioritization
10. Demonstrated ability to work in a consultative role with members of the Interprofessional team
11. Knowledge and experience in change theory and adult learning principles
12. Demonstrated ability to utilize information technology
14. Membership in the Registered Nurses Association or Ontario (RNAO) and other professional organizations relevant to the role
