Job summary

A community environmental organization is seeking a dedicated volunteer to coordinate beach clean-ups and lead community engagement activities. Responsibilities include organizing local and remote clean-ups, managing beach clean kits, and collaborating with volunteers and partners. Surfrider South Vancouver Island, Core Crew, Beach Clean (BC) committee

Position type

Two year volunteer commitment (average, 3hrs per week + monthly clean-up)

Reports to

Executive Committee

Summary

Coordinating/leading your own clean ups, which includes collecting and analyzing data, working with volunteers, as well as engaging the public in conversations around marine debris and plastic pollution. Responsible for beach clean kits, and promotional materials and presenting on Beach Cleans for sponsors and policy.

Key Responsibilities
  • Monthly meetings with the committee to go over tasks and responsibilities for the next upcoming clean-up. Ensures all cleanups have appropriate approvals, permits, insurance.
  • Lead/organize 1-2 local cleanups monthly and 1-2 remote clean-ups annually
  • Beach kit/remote kit maintenance (monthly) replacing broken items, cleaning buckets & washing gloves keeping kits in order, first aid kits in date
  • Work with the Beach Clean committee and encourages volunteers to lead different clean-ups throughout the year
  • Assist beach clean leads each month to ensure they have all they need for their clean ups, including First Nation speakers, volunteers, waste free and local catering, debris removal, etc. Supports transporting equipment and gear when necessary.
  • Sharing information/education/photos on the Beach Clean program to the Media Lead
  • Uses Surfrider SVI Beach Clean up email address for all surfrider communications & replies to emails within 3 days
  • Support with updating beach clean-up data to beach clean Data sheet and report data out to the media/network.
  • Supports relationship building with cleanup partners including First Nations, ENGOs, state government parks, local governments
  • Supports Chapter Coordinator with fundraising for BC including acquiring grants and sponsorships
  • Refers to our chapternet for SF resources code: gosurf
  • Completes SF University in 3 months.
  • Ensure BC Annual Planner and BC Folder is up to date and organized
  • Coordinate debris transportation to the Ocean Plastic Depot with West Coast Landfill staff
  • Liaise with new and existing stakeholders, media, sponsors and partners
  • Contributes BC content to website, monthly newsletter, EC meetings, core crew emails
  • Attends Surfrider public meetings & events when available
  • Joins/follows/likes; official Surfrider SVI Facebook page, public forum, Instagram feeds
Qualifications
  • Familiar with all of Surfrider Foundation SVI programs & campaigns
  • Becomes a Surfrider Foundation member
  • Organized and can dedicate his/her time to accomplish monthly tasks
  • Strong communicator, leader, team member, and public speaker
  • Familiarity with MS Word, Excel, Google docs & calendar, mailchimp and WordPress
  • Uses popular social media: Facebook, Instagram
  • Holds BC drivers license, has access to a vehicle and is willing to use their vehicle for chapter operations
