Job summary

Surrey Police Service (SPS) is hiring a Regular Full-Time Media Relations Coordinator to join the Communications Section. The role reports to the Sergeant/Media Relations Officer and supports news releases, media advisories, and public messaging while handling inquiries from media and the public.

The position is on-site with a 35-hour work week. A Grade 12 plus degree/diploma in communications or related field is required, with at least four years of experience and police clearance.

Qualifications

  • Completion of Grade 12, supplemented by a degree or diploma in communications, journalism, media, public relations, or a related field.
  • A minimum of four years related experience.
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Previous police experience preferred.
  • All applicants must obtain and maintain the required police security clearance throughout their employment with SPS, which includes a mandatory polygraph examination.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates media interviews, events, and press conferences.
  • Monitors and reviews daily news media for relevant stories and catalogues and distributes notable information.
  • Assists the Media Relations Officers in monitoring, tracking, and responding to media relations enquires received by phone or email.
  • Responds to enquiries from external government agencies, journalists, civilians, and other police agencies.
  • Researches, verifies, and summarizes file and related information to prepare news releases and/or prepare spokespersons for media interviews.
  • Drafts news releases, media advisories, and public messaging for approval by Media Relations Officers or appropriate SPS employees.
  • Prepares and produces media related materials.
  • Maintains and updates databases of media files, media contact information, messaging, background information, and other related data.
  • Tracks and provides media-related statistics to relevant stakeholders.
  • Posts news releases online through the appropriate communication channels.
  • Provides guidance and training to staff in a workplace setting.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
