Job summary

POSITION OVERVIEW:

Surrey Police Service (SPS) has an exciting opportunity for a Regular Full-Time Telecommunications Operator 2 to join SPS’s Operational Communications Centre (OCC). Reporting to the OCC Shift Manager, this position is responsible for a wide variety of critical telecommunications duties within the SPS OCC. The incumbent will handle a number of complex, time sensitive duties in various functional areas including but not limited to dispatch, call‑taking, info radio and info messaging centre. The incumbent will exercise independence of judgement and work under limited supervision.

Please note this is an in‑office position with currently no option for remote work. The anticipated work schedule is a rotating schedule of four (4) 12‑hour shifts, followed by four days off; subject to change based on operational need and adherence to the Collective Agreement. Incumbents must be able to work days, evenings, graveyards, holidays and weekends.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Responds to varied calls such as complaints, emergency 911 and non‑emergency calls, and general inquiries. Accurately evaluates incoming calls and prioritises calls.
• Takes reports and enters detailed accurate information within time constraints.
• Provides critical information with speed and accuracy staff, the public, and other agencies.
• Dispatches calls for police response to appropriate police personnel including additional units to assist on calls as required.
• Assesses the situation, identifies other agencies that may be required for the event, and contacts the agencies directly.
• Monitors the status and location of police units and liaises closely with police officers in the CSOC.
• Completes forms, reports, and records pertaining to incoming calls, dispatch functions performed, and to information received from police officers.
• Responds to requests for information from police units by using CPIC, CAD, Prime, and other information sources.
• May be required to attend court to give evidence.
• Performs CPIC maintenance including data entry, modifications, information removal, and retrieval.
• Replies to inquiries from other police agencies.
• Drafts messages relating to warrants or CPIC hits and sends them to appropriate agencies.
• Maintains comprehensive file records per various file management requirements.
• Maintains general upkeep and cleaning of equipment and workstation.
• Trains and assists other employees as required.
• Performs related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Completion of Grade 12
• Minimum of twelve (12) months related training and experience in the use and operation of police telecommunications dispatch and complaint taking equipment and information systems and a demonstrated competence in dispatching.
• Accurate typing speed of 45 wpm.
• An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
• The ability to work rotating shifts, including days, graveyards, holidays and weekends.
• This position requires both SPS Security Clearance and RCMP Reliability Status. All applicants must obtain and maintain the required police security clearance throughout their employment with SPS, which includes a mandatory polygraph examination.

• The salary range is $40.53/hour - $47.68/hour (pay grade 24C); based on June 1, 2025 market adjustment
• Shift Differential: $5.00/hour additional from Sunday to Thursday, 19:00-07:00. $8.00/hour additional from Friday to Saturday from 19:00-07:00; Effective June 1, 2025.
