Job summary

Simon Fraser University’s Centre for Accessible Learning (CAL) seeks a Specialist, Accessible Exam Services to ensure accommodations and an inclusive exam environment. The role tracks exam details and supports student-facing and instructor-facing communications.

You will work with Disability Access Advisors, recruit and train Exam Assistant Invigilators, and help raise CAL’s visibility and mandate. Hybrid work is available; assignment end date is 2027-04-01.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Counseling, Education, Social Work, or related field with two years of student-facing work in a post-secondary setting.
  • Experience with students with disabilities and providing accommodations.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills.

Responsibilities

  • Track and implement accommodated exams and ensure accurate records.
  • Create and deliver student-focused and instructor-focused exam communications.
  • Support Manager with recruiting, training and supervision of Exam Assistant Invigilators.
  • Collaborate with Disability Access Advisors to uphold accessibility standards.

The Centre for Accessible Learning (CAL) acts as a liaison between students and faculty in the implementation of disability-related accommodations and services for SFU Students. CAL is responsible for upholding SFU's General Policy 26 ("Accessibility for Students with Disabilities") and also advocates on issues related to diversity, educational equity, and academic achievement. The CAL Accessible team has key student-facing and instructor-facing responsibilities to ensure that SFU upholds its legal obligation to provide reasonable accommodations to students with disabilities. The team administers over 10,000 unique accommodated exams per year and works collaboratively with Disability Access Advisors and Exam Assistants to create an inclusive environment during the accommodated exam-writing experience. In addition to accommodated exams, the team is responsible for coordinating and implementing in-class accommodations to support students in lectures. Our team values trust, open communication, creative problem-solving, and shares a commitment to improving the student experience.

About the Role

The Specialist, Accessible Exam Services has key student-facing responsibilities to ensure that SFU upholds its legal obligation as per the Accessible British Columbia Act and GP 26 to provide reasonable accommodations to students with disabilities and an inclusive environment during the accommodated exam-writing experiences. This role is responsible for ensuring the details of each accommodated exam are tracked, implemented and monitored. Focusing on experiential learning and improving CAL's visibility, accessibility, and understanding of mandate, this role will actively participate as part of the CAL Exams Team in researching, creating and delivering student-focused and instructor-focused exam communications and education. The Specialist, Accessible Exam Services will also take an active role and demonstrate initiative in supporting the Manager, Accessible Exam Services, with recruiting, training and supervision of Exam Assistant Invigilators.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Counseling, Education, Social Work, or a related discipline with two years of experience in student-facing work in a post-secondary setting, including working with students with disabilities, providing student-centered service and presenting and delivering information to student audiences or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

  • Good knowledge and experience to dealing with vulnerable populations.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to handle competing requests from multiple sources and to regularly interact with individuals who may be experiencing difficulties.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
  • High attention to detail.

Additional Information

The assignment end date is April 1, 2027.

Occasional evening and weekend hours may be required, particularly during exam periods. Occasional work at the Surrey Campus may also be required.
