Job summary

Simon Fraser University seeks an Associate Director, Technical Solutions to lead a high-caliber team responsible for education solutions, computing infrastructure, instructional technologies, laboratories, and research computing environments across SFU’s multi-campus setting.

The role shapes technical strategy, advances education and research computing capacity, and guides sustainable service models in close collaboration with academic leaders and researchers.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience leading technical teams in a complex org, preferably in a post-secondary or research-intensive setting.
  • Experience supporting teaching, learning, and research computing environments including labs and research infrastructure.
  • Knowledge of modern computing infrastructure, cloud and on-premise, HPC, data storage, cybersecurity, AI infra.

About the Role

Join the School of Computing Science and Faculty of Applied Sciences in a new leadership role that advances and enhances education solutions, research computing, and technical services supporting teaching, learning, and research. The Associate Director, Technical Solutions will lead a highly skilled team of technical professionals responsible for specialized education solutions, computing infrastructure, instructional technologies, laboratories, and research computing environments across a complex, multi-campus setting. This role offers the opportunity to shape technical strategy, strengthen education and research computing capacity, and guide the continued evolution of services that support academic and research excellence. Working closely with academic leaders, researchers, and technical professionals, the Associate Director will provide strategic leadership in education technology, infrastructure planning, emerging technologies, cybersecurity, lifecycle management, and sustainable service models. The position will play a key role in aligning technical capabilities with evolving teaching and research priorities, advancing customized education and research solutions, and contributing directly to the School and Faculty’s academic and research mission.

The successful candidate will be an experienced technical leader with expertise in computing environments that support education and research. They will bring demonstrated experience leading professional and technical teams, shaping technical strategy, and translating academic and research priorities into sustainable solutions. The ideal candidate will have knowledge of research computing, high-performance computing, cloud and on-premise infrastructure, cybersecurity, data management, and emerging technologies. A collaborative and strategic leader, they will build strong relationships with academic leaders, researchers, instructors, and technical professionals while advancing education solutions, research capability, infrastructure planning, service delivery, and operational excellence across a complex, multi-campus environment.

Full Job Description

Qualifications

Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related discipline, and 8 years of progressively responsible leadership experience in technical operations, computing infrastructure, research computing, information technology, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and training.

  • Significant experience leading technical teams and managing professional staff in a complex organization, preferably within a post-secondary, research-intensive, technology-focused environment, with demonstrated success in setting priorities, developing staff, and delivering reliable technical services.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting complex computing environments for teaching, learning, and research, including specialized laboratories, instructional technologies, research computing infrastructure, and the evolving technical needs of faculty, researchers, and students.
  • Advanced knowledge of modern computing infrastructure and emerging technologies, including cloud and on-premise environments, high-performance and research computing, data storage and management, networking, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence infrastructure, and related advanced computing environments.
