Reporting to the Manager, Space Planning, the Space Planner supports the efficient and strategic use of NAIT’s physical space resources. The position contributes to the planning, development, and stewardship of campus environments that support teaching, learning, research, administration, and student experience.

Working collaboratively with internal stakeholders, the Space Planner provides planning expertise, space analysis, functional programming, interior design, and accommodation strategies that align with NAIT’s priorities, operational requirements, and campus standards.

The Space Planner contributes to both long-range campus planning initiatives and day-to-day space management activities, including space inventory management, public realm improvements, workplace planning, furniture coordination, and renovation planning.

Key Responsibilities

Space Planning & Workplace Strategy

• Consult and collaborate with stakeholders to understand current and future business requirements, operational drivers, growth projections, and organizational changes that impact space needs.
• Review, analyze, and validate space requests; assess impacts, opportunities, constraints, and utilization considerations. Develop space planning options, recommendations, and preliminary scope documents that support the operational, educational, and strategic objectives of NAIT business units while optimizing the use of institutional space resources.
• Prepare functional programs quantifying space needs and identifying operational requirements, adjacencies, accessibility requirements, and technical considerations.
• Support the transition toward innovative, flexible, and efficient workplaces, including shared, hybrid, and activity-based work environments.
• Contribute to the development of multi-year strategic space renewal and improvement programs.

Furniture & Interior Design

• Review consultant deliverables to ensure alignment with NAIT standards and operational objectives.
• Provide technical review and recommendations related to interior design, furniture systems, finishes, accessibility, and space functionality. Ensure consistency with institutional standards, accessibility requirements, and campus design objectives.

Space Management

• Assist in maintaining and enhancing NAIT’s space inventory data systems, including space classifications, allocations, utilization information, and record drawings.
• Support the development of space metrics, reporting, analysis, and planning data to inform institutional decision-making.
• Contribute to the continuous improvement of space planning standards, policies, procedures, guidelines, and best practices.

Communication & Stakeholder Engagement

• Build collaborative working relationships with stakeholders across the institution to support planning initiatives and decision-making.
• Present planning reports and recommendations to leadership teams and stakeholders.
• Promote a positive client experience through responsive service, effective communication, and collaborative problem-solving.

Leadership & Team Support

• Provide guidance, mentorship, and technical support to junior staff, student staff, or project team members as assigned.
• Contribute to a collaborative, innovative, and service-oriented team environment.

Skills & Abilities

• Strong understanding of furniture systems, interior design and construction documentation within commercial, institutional, or post-secondary environments.
• Ability to apply building codes and accessibility requirements to projects.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to develop practical and strategic solutions.
• Excellent communication, facilitation, and stakeholder engagement skills, including the ability to navigate complex conversations and competing priorities.
• Strong organizational and time-management skills.
• Curiosity, adaptability, initiative, and a commitment to continuous improvement.
• Proficiency in AutoCAD and Microsoft 365 applications. Experience with Bluebeam, Adobe Creative Suite, and IWMS systems such as AiM is considered an asset.

This position is covered by the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) Collective Agreement.

Remuneration

Refer to salary range noted on this posting, plus a comprehensive benefits package.

The compensation range for this job posting is : $80,008.73 - $107,501.88
