Job summary

Paladin Security is seeking a Security Officer at Saint Mary's University in Halifax. The role operates on a 4-day on/4-day off schedule, with 0800-2000 and 2000-0800 shifts, and involves desk duties, incident logging, dispatching officers, and coordinating with facilities for emergencies.

The candidate should hold or be able to obtain a Nova Scotia security license, have First Aid/CPR-C, and possess English fluency.

Qualifications

• Ability to obtain Security License for the province of Nova Scotia.
• Must currently hold a valid Intermediate First Aid & CPR - Level C.
• English (oral and written) fluency is a must.
• Previous experience in security, law enforcement, or a related field preferred.
• Certifications in Use of Force (UOF) and Management of Aggressive Behavior (MOAB) encouraged.

Responsibilities

• Answer telephone calls and queries at the Security Desk and take appropriate action.
• Maintain a daily Occurrence Log of all events as they happen.
• Dispatch Security Officers to locations where security presence is required.
• Monitor security cameras and recording equipment.
• Monitor alarm systems and take appropriate action.
• Liaise with access control and facilities teams for repairs and emergencies.
• Maintain key issue logs and account for keys.
• Print required reports and assist in training new staff.

Site Description: Located in Mi’kma’ki, Saint Mary's University (SMU) is a public institution known for its multicultural campus and strong academic reputation.

Position: Security Officer

Site: SMU

Hours: 4-day on 4-day off (4 days-4 off-4 nights)- 0800-2000Hrs, 2000-0800Hrs

Key Responsibilities:

• Answer telephone calls and queries at the Security Desk and take appropriate action
• Maintain a daily Occurrence Log of all events, as they happen
• Dispatch Security Officers, as required, to various locations where security presence is required
• Maintain computerized logs
• Maintains Key Issue Logs and issue, recover and account for keys
• Monitor security cameras/video recording equipment
• Monitor equipment status and request repairs
• Monitor security alarm systems and take appropriate action
• Monitor the key press, noting all missing/non-returned keys
• Print all required reports, as applicable
• Assist in orientation or training of new dispatch staff
• Monitor fire control panel and direct Security Officers on fire emergencies in accordance with university procedures
• Liaise with the access control company to affect repairs on CCure access control system or associated doors/alarms, as required
• Liaise with maintenance for repairs or response to facilities emergencies, such as floods or leaks, in accordance with information received from the Shift Supervisor
• Liaise with Facilities Management for clean-up response to floods or other spills
• Accept and account for lost and found items
• Other duties and assignments, as delegated by the University Security Manager.

Prerequisites:

• Ability to obtain Security License for the province of Nova Scotia
• Must currently hold a valid Intermediate First Aid & CPR - Level C (from a CSA-approved vendor)
• English (oral and written) fluency is a must
• Previous experience in security, law enforcement, or a related field preferred.
• Must be able to provide certifications in Use of Force (UOF) and Management of Aggressive Behavior (MOAB)
• Applicants lacking these certifications can opt into Paladin's UoF/MOAB training program prior to their onboarding training to ensure they meet the requirements of the position
• Please be aware: The UoF/MOAB training is not paid as it is a pre-requisite; however, Paladin will cover all of the costs of the training with a 6-month commitment to the position/availability
