Job summary

The Salvation Army Canada and Bermuda Territory is seeking a Shelter Assistant to provide administrative and facility support for residents and clients in a community shelter in British Columbia. The role includes cleaning, client preparation, safety monitoring, and daily operations to ensure a respectful, secure environment.

Responsibilities cover daily tasks from intake orientation to shift handovers, with medication storage, basic cooking, and documentation duties.

Qualifications

• Certificate in First Aid and CPR Training.
• Non-Violent Crises Intervention Training.
• Naloxone Training.
• Ability and willingness to undergo background checks as required by The Salvation Army.

Responsibilities

• Cleans shelter rooms, washrooms, kitchen, lounge and common areas.
• Packs client belongings and preps beds and rooms for new clients.
• Monitors environment and clients to ensure safety and security.
• Performs laundry services for the shelter and clients.
• Provides safe storage and recording of prescribed medications.
• Acts as a positive role model promoting dignity and respect.
• Cooks for shelter clients when needed and assists with meal service.
• Maintains shift-change procedures and shelter logs.
• Keeps required documentation; updates HFIS database entries.
• Sends and disposes of refuse; performs spot cleaning as required.
• Monitors behavior and enforces shelter rules.
• Provides orientation to new clients.
• Participates with staff to maintain a safe, caring environment; supports emergencies as needed.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
