The Opportunity:

WSP has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Archaeologist to join our Heritage team in Lower Mainland British Columbia. As a Senior Archaeologist, you will work closely with the rest of the Heritage team to lead and manage projects throughout the province. This is a senior position with responsibility for providing high-quality archaeology services and contributing to the strategic development of the BC archaeology business. Preference will be given to those candidates that have HCA permit-holding status in one of the three Culture Areas. Successful candidates will ideally be based in one of our BC Lower Mainland offices.

What you can expect to do here
  • Provide leadership, mentorship, and guidance to junior and intermediate staff
  • Contribute to strategic decision-making and help define the future of the BC archaeology business as part of the BC heritage senior leadership team
  • Actively participate in building and maintaining relationships with Indigenous groups and communities throughout BC
  • Oversee and work with project teams to achieve the technical requirements and expectations of clients, Indigenous groups, and regulatory agencies
  • If HCA permit eligible, secure heritage inspection, investigation, or alteration permits
  • Liaise with regulators as needed, including the Archaeology Branch and BC Energy Regulator
  • Design, oversee, and manage archaeology projects and field programs
  • Work with both internal and external stakeholders to develop and manage project scope, schedule, and budget
  • Contribute to business development with both existing and prospective clients
  • Oversee and provide technical review of analysis and reporting to maintain a high level of quality
  • Participate in WSP’s Health & Safety program, demonstrating a “Safety First” focus and acting as a role model to other staff
What you'll bring to WSP
  • A degree in Archaeology or Anthropology and demonstrable expertise in the discipline of archaeology
  • Experience leading archaeology projects and teams, with preference given to candidates with direct archaeology consulting experience
  • A passion for working with Indigenous groups and communities, with preference given to candidates who can demonstrate existing positive relationships with these groups and communities
  • Willingness and ability to contribute to a positive team environment and also be able to work independently
  • Strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills, including an aptitude for mentoring
  • Ability to provide detailed review of technical documents, including a willingness to provide constructive feedback to junior and intermediate staff
  • Experience identifying, recording, and evaluating archaeological sites within BC and the ability to mentor junior or intermediate staff in the identification and recording of these sites
  • Candidates with Field Director and Permit Holder status in at least one BC Culture Area will be given preference, including those in good standing with the BCAPA as a Registered Professional Consulting Archaeologist
  • Experience with the suite of Microsoft Office programs (e.g., Word, Excel, Project) and Adobe Acrobat Software

Compensation

Salary range (in British Columbia): $102,100 - $140,400

The final salary awarded for this role may vary from the above range based on several factors including, but not limited to, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, geographic location, performance, and business or organizational needs. The salary range provided in this job posting may be subject to change for business purposes.
