Job Description
- Security guardscontrol access to establishments, operate securitycontrol-room equipment and patrol assigned areas to guardagainst theft, vandalism and fire, enforce regulations tomaintain order and resolve conflicts and to monitorestablishment activities; ensure safety and emergencyprocedures are followed; issue passes and direct visitors toappropriate areas, check age identification of patrons, andperform security checks of passengers and luggage atairports.
- Armored car guardsdrive and guard armored trucks, pick-up and deliver cash andvaluables to banks, automated teller machines and retailestablishments.
- Corporate securityofficers investigate unlawful acts of employees or patrons ofestablishments and recommend security systems such as electronicdetection devices and access devices.
- Private investigatorsconduct investigations to locate missing persons and obtaininformation for use in civil and criminal litigation matters orfor other purposes; they may also conduct polygraph tests(integrity surveys) for clients.
- Retail lossprevention officers prevent and detect shoplifting andtheft in retail establishments.
- Remove trespassers orunwanted individuals from the property.
- Contact the relevantauthorities if a crime is committed or an accidentoccurs.
- Report to supervisorson a regular basis.
- Record any suspiciousactivities to the supervisor.
- Enforce regulationsto maintain order and resolve conflicts and to monitorestablishment activities

Requirements
- Completionof secondary school is usually required.
- Acollege diploma in law and security or police technology mayberequired.
- Trainingis provided for airport security guards andestablishment-specific training maybe provided for securityoccupations in this unit group.
- Securityguards carrying firearms require a license.
- Armoredcar drivers require a Valid Possession and Acquisition License(PAL) and a Firearms Acquisition Certificate (FAC) for bothrestricted and non-restricted firearms.
- InQuebec, a permit issued by the Sûreté du Québec is required towork as a private detective or security officer.
- Corporatesecurity officers may require experience as a policeofficer.
- Privateinvestigators require provincial licensures.
- Responsiblebeverage service certification is usually required for securitystaff in establishments serving alcoholic beverages.
- Basicfirst aid skills would be advantageous.
- Physicalstrength and fitness.
- Priorexperience as a Security Guard would be advantageous.
