Job summary

YMCA of Greater Halifax/Dartmouth in Truro is seeking a School Settlement Program Staff for the 2026–2027 season. This full-time, seasonal role supports newcomers by planning and delivering activities that foster belonging and access to education.

Under supervision, you will help students and families adapt to the school system, connect with educators and community resources, and report on program activities. A valid driver’s license and strong communication skills are essential.

Qualifications

• English language proficiency; additional languages are assets.
• Experience in community settings with diverse populations.
• Knowledge of Nova Scotia school system.
• Valid driver's license and access to a vehicle.
• Excellent data management and Microsoft 365 skills.
• Strong interpersonal and communication abilities.
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks.

Position Status: Full Time, Seasonal (September2026 – June 2027)

Compensation: $33,725.28 (Over 10 Months)

About the Role:

The School Settlement Program Staff plays anessential role in the planning, implementation, and delivery of activities andservices designed to support and empower newcomers as they settle in their newcommunity. This position, under the supervision of the coordinator, works toensure that programs and services are inclusive, accessible, and responsive tothe diverse needs of newcomers, fostering a sense of belonging. This role involves providing assistance tostudents and families in adapting to their new educational environment,navigating the school system, and accessing community resources. This role willcollaborate with educators, school administrators, and community organizationsto ensure that newcomer families receive the necessary support for academicsuccess and social integration. By fostering positive relationships betweenstudents, schools, and the wider community, this role helps newcomers feelwelcome, supported, and empowered in their educational and settlement journey.

Education and Skills Qualifications:

• Language proficiency in English and additional languages is anasset
• Combination of education and experience working in communitysetting
• Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills
• Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multipletasks, meeting deadlines
• Understanding of, and experience with, the Nova Scotia schoolsystem – policies, procedures, expectations etc.
• Demonstrated discretion and sound judgement in the handling ofconfidential information
• Excellent data management skills and Microsoft 365 Skills
• Experience working with and providing service to diversepopulations
• High level of initiative is needed to work independently andrespond to unanticipated situations
• Experience delivering presentations and workshops
• Experience working with children providing creative groupactivities
• Valid drivers’ license and vehicle
