Job summary

YMCA is hiring an After School Program Staff for Community Y. This part-time role (15 hours per week, Monday–Friday, 2:30–5:30pm) involves direct supervision of youth, creating engaging activities, and fostering a safe, inclusive environment for children enrolled in the after-school program.

The role emphasizes supporting children in developing social, emotional, and physical skills through arts, crafts, sports, homework help, and group games.

Qualifications

  • Highschool diploma or equivalent required; college coursework in education, recreation, or child development is a plus.
  • CPR and First Aid certification or willingness to obtain upon hiring.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work collaboratively in a team.

Responsibilities

  • Provide active supervision of children during all activities and transitions, ensuring a safe environment.
  • Implement and enforce safety while following YMCA Child Safeguarding policies; conduct headcounts and sign-in/out per policies.
  • Plan, organize, and implement a variety of age-appropriate activities including arts, crafts, sports, and games.
  • Lead group activities that promote teamwork, positive social interactions, and healthy development.
  • Model positive attitudes and communication, fostering respect and cooperation among all children.
  • Assist with setup, registration, attendance tracking, and daily sign-ins, maintaining clean spaces.

About the Role

Reporting to the Community Y Program Coordinator, the AfterSchool Program Staff plays a vital role in the YMCA's mission to support andnurture children and youth in the community. This position involves directsupervision of youth, creating engaging activities, and fostering a safeenvironment for children enrolled in the after-school program. The staff willsupport children in developing social, emotional, and physical skills through avariety of fun, structured activities, including arts and crafts, sports,homework help, and group games. The goal is to create a welcoming, inclusiveatmosphere where every child feels supported and valued.

In this role, you will:
  • Provideactive supervision of children during all activities and transitions,ensuring a safe and secure environment for all involved.
  • Implementand enforce safety while following YMCA Child Safeguarding policiesensuring the safety of all participants. Conduct headcounts regularly andensure children are signed in and out of the program according to YMCApolicies.
  • Plan,organize, and implement a variety of age-appropriate activities, includinggames, arts and crafts, sports, and recreational activities.
  • Leadgroup activities that promote teamwork, positive social interactions, andhealthy child and youth development.
  • Serveas a role model by demonstrating positive attitudes, communication skills,and relationship building behaviors which focus on conflict resolution,respect and cooperation among all children.
  • Buildand maintain positive and supportive relationships with children, ensuringthey feel safe, valued, and head.
  • Helpset up equipment in the gymnasium, for food handling and dishes as well ascrafts and games. Help maintain clean, tidy, and organized closets.
  • Helpwith registration, attendance tracking, daily sign ins of youth.
  • FollowYMCA protocol of documenting First Aid, and Incident reports in a timelymatter.
  • Communicateeffectively with the Program Coordinator with feedback on programming,children’s behavior, and participation in the program.
  • Communicatein a professional and effective manner with parents of the youth with anyincidents that occur.
  • Stafftake action to support members who are waiting or need assistance. Staffgreet members within 5 feet and acknowledge members within 10 feet. Stafftake ownership to maintain clean and tidy spaces. Staff ensure YMCAequipment and facilities in good repair and resolve or report any issuespromptly.
  • Otherduties as assigned.
Education and Skills Qualifications
  • Highschool diploma or equivalent required; college coursework in education,recreation, or child development is a plus.
  • Previousexperience working with children in a group setting (e.g., daycare, summercamp, school setting) is preferred.
  • CPRand First Aid certification or willingness to obtain upon hiring.
  • Strongcommunication and interpersonal skills.
  • Abilityto work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Abilityto manage groups of children with diverse needs and interests, showingpatience, kindness and understanding.
  • Demonstratedleadership skills and ability to maintain control in challengingsituations.
  • Passionfor working with children and a commitment to promoting a positive,inclusive environment.

  • CriminalRecord Check, Vulnerable Sector Check, and Child Abuse Registry Check(less than 6 months old), if 18 years of age or older.
  • AttendChild Safeguarding Training upon hire.
  • ValidFirst Aid and CPR Training.
