Job summary

Agnico Eagle Mines Limited is seeking a Principal Metallurgist for its Detour Lake Mine in Ontario. You will oversee metallurgical test programs, analyze process data, and guide improvements across crushing, grinding, leaching, and gold recovery. You’ll mentor technicians and coordinate projects to deliver on time and within budget.

The role emphasizes leadership, safety, and collaboration with internal teams and contractors in a remote mining environment in Canada.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Oversee the design and execution of metallurgical test programs, including pilot plant trials and full-scale plant tests.
• Analyze process data and performance metrics to identify opportunities for improvement and implement process enhancements.
• Provide technical expertise on metallurgical processes including crushing, grinding, leaching, and gold recovery.
• Lead and manage a team of metallurgical technicians and engineers in absence of the supervisor.
• Prepare project proposals, budgets, and schedules; monitor progress against plans.

YOUR NEXT CHALLENGE:

• Oversee the design and execution of metallurgical test programs, including pilot plant trials and full-scale plant tests;
• Analyze process data and performance metrics to identify opportunities for improvement and implement process enhancements;
• Provide technical expertise and guidance on metallurgical processes, including crushing, grinding, leaching, and gold recovery;
• Stay abreast of the latest advancements in metallurgical technology and best practices, and implement innovative solutions to improve plant performance;
• Develop and maintain metallurgical models and simulations to predict process behavior and outcomes;
• Manage metallurgical projects from conception through to completion, ensuring they are delivered on time, within budget, and to the required quality standards;
• Coordinate with internal and external stakeholders, including consultants and contractors, to ensure successful project execution;
• Prepare project proposals, budgets, and schedules, and monitor project progress against these plans;
• Prepare weekly / monthly summary reports on process performance, or as directed by Metallurgical Supervisor;
• Prepare comprehensive technical reports and presentations on metallurgical performance, test results, and improvement initiatives;
• Communicate findings and recommendations to senior management and other stakeholders;
• Lead and manage a team of metallurgical technicians, metallurgists and refiners in absence of the Metallurgical Supervisor;
• Provide training and support to plant operators, metallurgists and junior metallurgists on metallurgical processes and procedures;
• Participate in professional development opportunities to enhance metallurgical knowledge and skills;
• Mentor and develop junior staff, fostering a collaborative and high-performance team culture, encouraging continuous learning and improvement.

WHAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED

• 5-8 years of experience in metallurgical or mineral processing roles, with a focus on gold mining;
• Bachelor’s degree in Metallurgy, Chemical Engineering, or a related field;
• Proven track record of leading and optimizing metallurgical processes;
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite and data/production analysis tools.
• Excellent communication, leadership, and teamwork abilities;
• Commitment to safety and environmental stewardship.

Your Work Schedule:

Schedule: 4/3 schedule at our Detour Lake Mine;

Accommodations and meals are provided on site at no cost to the employee. Agnico Eagle provides transportation to and from the mine site and will accommodate to cover other travelling expenses according to your location of residence in Canada.
