Job summary

York University is seeking a Housing Systems Specialist to coordinate system implementations, research and deploy data-informed solutions for Ancillary Services. You will work with Housing & Conference Services and UIT teams to upgrade and support applications, ensuring compliance and security while handling confidential information.

The role requires a university degree in CS/MIS or equivalent experience, plus four years in housing systems, with strong data analysis and SQL skills.

Purpose

Ancillary Services provides a wide range of professionally managed campus services and amenities to enhance the student experience and support York University's mission, vision, and priorities. Reporting to the Director, Housing & Conference Services, the Housing Systems Specialist coordinates the activities to implement systems, technology solutions, and/or business process improvements using data-informed practices. Working with Housing & Conference Services clients and in collaboration with UIT teams, this role will be responsible to research, analyze, evaluate, recommend, and deploy systems for problem resolution, expansion, optimization, or integration. The role will develop, upgrade, support, configure, modify/adjust, enhance and modernize applications, platforms, and solutions for various systems used by Ancillary Services. Additionally, the role will provide second and third level support for vendor-based applications/systems, learn business rules and procedures by regularly meeting with partners to discuss their current and future needs and initiatives, and prioritize these needs effectively. As part of this work, the role will prepare and maintain system documents, standard operating procedures, information risk and security management protocols, specifications, works plans and records. The role receives and processes confidential, personal, and proprietary information and ensures policy and legislative requirements are achieved. Also, the role generates reports, forms and writes codes, as needed.

Education

University Degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems or a related field or an equivalent of 4 years recent experience (defined as within the last five years) working at York University and performing the same or similar tasks. This education equivalency is in addition to the experiential requirements outlined below.

Experience

Four (4) years related experience and skill in supporting a variety of systems in a post-secondary housing setting. Experience includes participating in the design, development and implementation of software and hardware solutions, systems, or products including troubleshooting web-based applications. Also, includes analysis of database and systems design/architecture, as well as data retrieval methodologies to achieve user needs.

  • Effective data analysis skills, documenting workflows, developing process maps, and the ability to translate data into recommendations and concise reports
  • Demonstrated analytical, mathematical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Effective communication skills with the ability to communicate ideas in both technical and user-friendly language.
  • Ability to write standard and specialized proprietary SQL codes
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to conduct research into systems issues and products as required.
  • Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team oriented, collaborative environment.
  • Understanding of Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act and factors required for compliance.
Technical
  • Demonstrated website design and server-based programming skills including HTML, JavaScript, CSS, PHP and XML
  • High proficiency in database/spreadsheet/data visualization (MS Access/MS Excel/MS Power BI) software. knowledge of core software applications, including StarRez an asset.
  • Strong understanding of networking technologies and their interaction with web-based applications
  • Extensive practical knowledge in importing and syncing data for use in data visualization tools, report software, spreadsheets, graphs, and flow charts
  • Knowledge of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools and their use in automating / simplifying coding tasks.

Hours of work: Mon-Fri 8:30-4:30 Summer: Same Requests to work overtime may occur periodically throughout the year Peak periods for this position: January to February, June, July, August to September Vacation restriction: April, January-February and August to September.
