Job summary

York University’s Facilities Services seeks an Electrical Systems Manager to act as the institution’s SME for low, medium, and high voltage electrical distribution systems and associated building systems. The role provides technical leadership for planning, renewal, and development of electrical infrastructure to support capital projects and operations across the campus.

Purpose:

With a commitment to sustainability, equity, diversity and inclusion, Facilities Services works with campus partners to provide exceptional customer service and satisfaction in alignment with the University's core values.Reporting to the Director, Utilities & Energy Management, the Electrical Systems Manager serves as the University's subject matter expert for low, medium, and high voltage electrical distribution systems and associated building systems. The role provides technical leadership for the planning, maintenance, renewal, and development of electrical infrastructure, supporting capital projects, renovations, maintenance activities, and operational reliability across the University.The role ensures electrical systems are safe, reliable, and compliant with applicable legislation, codes, engineering standards, and University requirements. The role acts as the University's primary technical contact with electrical utilities, including Alectra Utilities, Hydro One, and the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO), supporting service continuity, substation operations, infrastructure renewal, asset sustainability, and the long-term performance of the University's electrical distribution systems.


Education:

Bachelor's degree in a related field. Valid 309A Construction and Maintenance Electrician Licence (Province of Ontario) or Professional Engineer (P. Eng) designation in good standing with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) required. Note: Position requires verification of degree(s)/credential(s)


Experience:

6 years related experience in the operation, maintenance, renewal, and troubleshooting of low-voltage (less than 600V) and medium-voltage (600V to 44,000V) electrical distribution systems.


Experience in the maintenance, operation, troubleshooting, and management of industrial, low-voltage, and medium-voltage electrical systems, within a campus, utility, or large industrial environment.


Experience managing planned, preventative, corrective, and emergency maintenance activities for electrical infrastructure and critical building systems.


Experience in the design, construction, commissioning, upgrade, and replacement of electrical distribution systems, substations, and related infrastructure.


Experience managing construction, maintenance, and infrastructure projects, including contractor oversight, procurement/tendering processes, budgeting, and contract administration.


Experience developing and implementing preventative maintenance programs, asset management strategies, lifecycle planning, and capital renewal initiatives.


Experience interpreting and applying applicable electrical codes, legislation, engineering standards, and health and safety requirements.


Experience analyzing electrical system performance, asset condition, reliability, and operational requirements to support infrastructure planning and investment decisions.


Experience working within large, complex institutional, utility, healthcare, municipal, or similarly complex environments requiring coordination of infrastructure planning, maintenance, and renewal activities.


Knowledge:

Advanced knowledge of the Ontario Electrical Safety Code (OESC), CSA Z462 Workplace Electrical Safety Standard, and electrical distribution equipment (e.g., transformers, circuit breakers, switchgear) and associated maintenance practices.


Knowledge of emergency power and generator systems.


Knowledge of utility infrastructure and external electrical distribution interfaces.


Knowledge of metering, mechanical systems and building automation systems.


Knowledge of system analysis, life cycle costing, and asset management principles.


Skills:

Proficiency with MS Office, Project Management Software, AutoCad, Asset management and maintenance systems, and Adobe.

Additional Notes:

Work is performed in a combination of office, campus, substations, utility plant, tunnel, and construction site environments requiring regular travel between University locations.


*Compensation:

York's CPM Compensation Framework has a salary grid consisting of 6 or 8 steps (depending on job grade) which is reviewed annually with possible adjustments, and a lump sum Performance Based Recognition Award.
