Reporting to the Manager of Strategic Analytics, we are seeking a highly analytical and mission-driven Data Scientist to join our team. This role is key to advancing data-informed decision-making across Covenant Health, with a focus on strategic health planning and performance measurement. You will lead the design and implementation of advanced analytics solutions that support health service planning, improve system performance, and enhance patient outcomes. Drawing on deep expertise in data science and healthcare analytics, you’ll collaborate with clinical, operational, and executive stakeholders to extract actionable insights from complex health data. This position plays a vital role in developing high-quality models, algorithms, de-identification processes, visualizations, and evidence to support initiatives across acute and continuing care. You’ll interpret complex data, build predictive models, and forecast trends to guide strategic decisions. We’re looking for someone with strong problem-solving skills, the ability to work independently and collaboratively, and a talent for translating data patterns into insights. You’ll thrive in a fast-paced environment, managing multiple projects while fostering a data-driven culture. Proficiency with relational databases, data linkage, metadata, data quality, data literacy, and scripting languages is essential. Key Responsibilities: Design and implement predictive models and statistical analyses to support planning. Develop dashboards and visualizations using tools like Tableau or Python. Analyze health system data (e.g., patient flow, utilization, outcomes) to identify trends. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate raw data into strategic insights. Support performance reporting and benchmarking across programs and services. Ensure data integrity, governance, and compliance with privacy standards.

Required Qualifications:
Master’s degree in a relevant field such as Data Science, Computer Science, Healthcare Informatics, Statistics, Epidemiology, Biostatistics, or a related quantitative discipline.
Additional Required Qualifications:
3 - 5 years of practical experience in data science, preferably in a healthcare or medical research setting. Strong analytical skills with proficiency in advanced analytics, data mining, data visualization, and optimization. Proficiency in programming languages such as SQL, Python and/or R. Strong technical skills including statistical software packages including Anaconda and Tableau. Knowledge and experience in statistical and data mining techniques, e.g. GLM/Regression, Random Forest, Boosting, Trees. Continuous learning mindset with a commitment to staying updated with advancements in data science and healthcare analytics. Excellent oral and written communication skills to communicate ideas, methods, and key findings clearly and succinctly. Ability to work independently and take responsibility for your own work and time. Ability to liaise with a range of health professionals and scientific and industry specialists to provide context to health data and specifics on salient health informatics topics. Problem-solving skills to identify and find solutions to day-to-day practical and technical problems. Experience creating and giving presentations to a varied group of internal and external stakeholders. Knowledge of applicable regulatory considerations as it relates to but is not limited to: the utilization and access of health information from a research, operational and legislative perspective (Health Information Act, ITIA, POPA).
Preferred Qualifications:
Ph.D. in Epidemiology, Health Sciences or applicable discipline preferred. 5 - 10 years of analytics experience within the Alberta Health Care system. Training/experience in AI or Machine Learning Competencies and eHealth technologies. Familiarity with Connect Care or a similar clinical information system. Project Management or Research Experience. Familiarity with Alberta Health data and/or Canadian Institute for Health Information data.
