Summary:

The Cultural Services office is responsible for the management of the Civic Art Collection; delivery of a public art program; delivery of cultural grant programs; the St. Catharines Arts Awards program, cultural sector capacity-building initiatives; support for one Committee of City Council and ad hoc task forces; and the implementation, review and revision of culture-related plans and policies.

The Culture Coordinator, Public Art supports the planning, delivery, and evaluation of programs, initiatives, and services that strengthen St. Catharines’ cultural sector. This role plays a key part in advancing the City’s Culture Plan, fostering community partnerships, supporting the development of local artists and organizations, and enhancing public awareness of cultural activities.

A critical component of the position is coordinating elements of the City’s Public Art Program, including the Civic Art Collection, temporary and permanent public art initiatives, and cultural placemaking projects. The Coordinator is also responsible for marketing and communications activities that promote cultural programs, events, and opportunities, advancing St. Catharines as a creative, vibrant, and culturally rich city.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Support the implementation of the City’s Culture Plan and related strategies, policies, and programs.
  • Support the administration of the City’s Public Art Program, including acquisitions, commissions, conservation planning, and documentation.
  • Coordinate cultural services communications, marketing plans and materials design, including but not limited to social media, print and website marketing, newsletters and promotion of all programs and events run by the cultural services office including but not limited to exhibits, Arts Awards, Culture Days, cultural grant programs, calls for artists, and special projects.
  • Promote St. Catharines as a cultural destination by highlighting local artists, cultural assets, and sector achievements through print materials, digital platforms, newsletters (e.g., Culture Ink), and social media.
  • Work with Communications and Economic Development staff to ensure consistent branding, effective outreach, and positive public awareness of cultural initiatives.
  • Track analytics, compile performance metrics, and support evaluation of communications effectiveness.
  • Liaise with cultural organizations, artists and volunteers, and with other City departments as required.
  • Assist with the coordination, promotion, and delivery of cultural programs such as Culture Days, arts awards, capacity-building workshops, and City-supported initiatives.
  • Assist with the development and renewal of new cultural initiatives, programs, plans and proposals including but not limited to implementation of the St. Catharines Culture Plan.
  • Assist with community development and special event projects as they pertain to the goals and objectives of the City’s cultural services.
Position Requirements:
  • College diploma in Marketing, Communications, Arts Administration, Art History, Fine Arts or Cultural Studies program in a recognized post-secondary institution.
  • Two (2) years’ related experience working in a cultural organization.
  • Experience working within the arts sector in a community development capacity.
  • Experience and knowledge in marketing, visual arts, art history, public art, exhibitions, curatorial practice and collections management is considered an asset.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and to function effectively and efficiently under minimum supervision.
  • Professional, proven customer service, strong interpersonal, organizational, research and writing skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, with tact and diplomacy, with internal and external business partners
  • Demonstrated time management skills and ability to multi-task within a dynamic environment.
  • Proficient computer skills and working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite software programs.
  • Experience with Adobe Suite, website management and social media is considered an asset.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours including weekends, evenings and holidays.
  • Valid Ontario Driver’s licence, Class “G
