The Salvation Army exists to share the love of Jesus Christ, meet human needs and be a transforming influence in the communities of our world. Every position contributes to this mission. Harbour Light exists to restore hope and promote recovery in Vancouver’s downtown eastside.
The Cook prepares and serves nutritious meals according to menus, adhering to food service and safety regulations.
High school diploma plus specialized courses up to six months.
Cook’s papers (1-year course), WHMIS, First Aid, Food Safe, Criminal Record Check
One year in institutional kitchen or equivalent.
Frequent standing, moderate lifting, cutting, chopping, carrying, walking. Must lift over 20 pounds.
Requires focus on food prep, reading recipes, safety procedures, and occasional supply ordering.
Involves minor financial tasks, managing small cash amounts, with little input into budget.
Leads a group/work team, providing direction and oversight.
Kitchen setting with potential for dealing with angry or verbally abusive individuals, crowded conditions, and pressure from timelines. Risks include cuts, burns, and freezer entry.
Exposure to physical and chemical hazards; use of PPE and safety protocols required, including gloves, coats, rubber mats, and immunizations.
On call; specific hours vary.
