Overview

Finlandia Village is dedicated to serving mature adults by providing affordable, high quality, comfortable, and secure living accommodations, along with opportunities for social, spiritual, cultural and recreational interaction within an independent, caring community.

Position Summary

The Cook provides person centered care to residents to promote the comfort, safety and quality of life of the residents of Finlandia Nursing Home / Finlandia Village. Under the direction of the Director of Support Services, responsible for the preparation of meals and snacks and cleanliness of the kitchen and equipment.

Responsibilities
  • Prepares food in accordance with safety and sanitation regulations, the menu, standardized menus and methods best suited for the nutritional quality and appearance of the product
  • Follows HACCP principles in food preparation and monitors and records food temperatures for hazardous items
  • Cleans and maintains cleanliness of food preparation, storage areas and equipment
  • Receives and stores food supplies
  • Participates in continuous quality improvement activities and committee meetings such as infection control and health and safety
  • Participates in staff meetings and educational in-services
  • Develops and maintains a thorough working knowledge of the Finlandia Village Health and Safety Manual and associated Provincial Legislation
  • Any additional duties as assigned
Qualifications
  • Post-secondary diploma or certificate in chef training or culinary management or;
  • holds a certificate of qualification in the trade of Cook or Institutional Cook or;
  • has institutional, health care, restaurant, or hospitality cooking experience (in place of the identified educational / training requirements) to perform the duties required
  • Finnish speaking skill is considered an asset
  • An acceptable Police Vulnerable Sector Check verified within the past six months
  • 2-step TB test within the past six months
Physical Demands
  • Extensive walking and standing
  • Some lifting, working in awkward positions required in putting away supplies
  • Exposure to heat from the kitchen area
  • Exposure to biochemical agents and wet floors
  • Stress related to time pressures, deadlines, and reliance on outside services for regular delivery of food items
  • Occasional irregular hours and overtime
