Quinte West Public Library is seeking a Shelving Assistant (LA1) to keep our collections organized and accessible. This entry-level role supports Circulation and Technical Services, reporting to the Technical Services Supervisor, and involves shelving, sorting, and customer-friendly service.

Evening and weekend shifts are expected; qualifications include enrollment in or completion of high school, strong communication, and a flexible, team-focused attitude to help library users and maintain

Responsibilities

  • Reshelve library materials.
  • Maintain materials in the library collections in a neat and orderly fashion.
  • Assist in other support tasks as assigned.
  • Perform alphanumeric sorting and filling tasks.
  • Arrange returned material on book trucks.
  • Assist in housekeeping duties such as dusting, shelf reading, straightening shelves.
  • Answer directional questions.
  • Refer patrons to appropriate staff.
  • Assist with opening and closing procedures such as informing the public that the library is about to close, checking that the public have left the library, cleaning off tables, tidying library in particular the children’s play areas.

Job description

Position: Shelving Assistant (LA1)

Department: Circulation and Technical Services

Reports to: Technical Services Supervisor

Purpose and Scope: The Shelving Assistant plays an important role in maintaining a well organized, accessible and orderly collection of library material in many formats. As an essential part of a customer driven team, this position will be well informed and passionate about the programs, events and services offered by the library.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Reshelve library materials.
  • Maintain materials in the library collections in a neat and orderly fashion.
  • Assist in other support tasks as assigned.
  • Perform alphanumeric sorting and filling tasks.
  • Arrange returned material on book trucks.
  • Assist in housekeeping duties such as dusting, shelf reading, straightening shelves.
  • Answer directional questions.
  • Refer patrons to appropriate staff.
  • Assist with opening and closing procedures such as informing the public that the library is about to close, checking that the public have left the library, cleaning off tables, tidying library in particular the children’s play areas.
Anticipate and adapt to change with a sense of optimism and opportunity.
  • Provide assistance to all library users in a manner that is warm, welcoming and respectful.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding library user information.
  • Demonstrate loyalty and commitment to the organization.
  • Comply with the Employee Code of Conduct.
  • Ensure adherence to the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Library policies.
  • Other duties as required.

Education/Specialized Training/Skills:

  • Less than 6 months.
