Job summary

Nipissing University is seeking a Student Employment – NUWorks assistant to support the teaching greenhouse. You will plant, pot, water, fertilize, and tidy the greenhouse while working with faculty who train you on duties.

Hours are 5–10 per week at $17.60/hour plus vacation pay under ESA. This role helps support biology labs for undergraduate students and provides hands-on plant care experience on campus in North Bay.

Qualifications

  • Must be a current Nipissing University student.
  • Must apply and be approved for the NUWORK Program.
  • Comfortable communicating with faculty, staff and students.
  • Able to adapt to changing priorities and work under pressure.
  • Experience with plants is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Identify, collect and care for plants used in Biology labs.
  • Water, weed and occasionally fertilize plants.
  • Communicate with faculty supervisor about tasks.
  • Rearrange tasks to respond to changing priorities.
  • Assemble equipment and supplies for planting and maintenance.
  • Disassemble equipment and restore greenhouse setup.
  • Keep greenhouse, equipment and glassware clean and orderly.

Job Description:
The Assistant Greenhouse Technologist will assist with developing and maintaining the collection of plants used for undergraduate biology labs. Jobs will include collecting and potting plants, watering, fertilizing and weeding, as well as organizing and maintaining cleanliness and order of the teaching greenhouse. The Assistant Greenhouse Technologist will work alongside faculty who will train the student on all duties.

Duties Include:

  • Identifying, collecting and caring for plants required for teaching purposes in Biology labs.
  • Regular watering, weeding and occasional fertilization of plants.
  • Communicating with faculty supervisor on tasks requiring attention.
  • Able to change tasks to respond to changing priorities.
  • Assembling equipment, tools and supplies required for planting and maintaining collection.
  • Dissembling equipment and greenhouse set-up and putting items away.
  • Clean up greenhouse, equipment, supplies, and glassware.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be a current Nipissing University student
  • Must apply and be approved for the NUWORK Program (see link below to apply for NUWORK Program)
    • Work Study (NU Work) | Nipissing University
  • Comfortable communicating with faculty, staff and students.
  • Confident in asking questions if uncertain about any directions or instructions.
  • Being a quick learner and taking initiative in recognizing something that needs to be done and doing it before being asked, especially for tidying up spaces post-prep and post-lab.
  • Able to adapt to changing priorities and work well under pressure.
  • Previous experience working with plants is an asset.
  • Strong organization skills are an asset
