Job summary

Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) is offering a 2027 Winter Student Program for a Mechanical Technologist Student at Chalk River. The position focuses on design, assembly, and testing of specialized equipment, with hands-on prototyping and lab work alongside engineers in the ACE Branch.

It is a fully on-site role at Chalk River Laboratory. The program requires full-time student status back to studies after the term, with opportunities to contribute to safety-critical testing and equipment

Qualifications

• Must be returning to full-time studies upon completion of the work term.
• Field of Study: mechanical engineering technology or machinist technologist college program (or similar discipline).
• Year of study: College 1st, 2nd, 3rd year of studies

Responsibilities

• Assisting with lab testing of equipment.
• With guidance assemble equipment and tooling using engineering drawings.
• Participating in idea generation for the design and development of novel equipment.
• Helping maintain and implementing good housekeeping practices in a prototyping machine shop.
• Machine material to support prototyping of equipment using traditional manufacturing techniques (mills, lathes, drill press etc.)
• Other duties as assigned by your manager.

Imagine applying your technical skills to real-world challenges where safety, innovation, and precision truly matter. As a Mechanical Technologist Student with the Assembly, Commissioning and Electrical (ACE) Branch at Chalk River Laboratories, you will contribute directly to the design, assembly, and testing of specialized equipment that supports the nuclear industry, such as tooling used for remote inspection of nuclear facilities. Working alongside experienced engineers and technologists, you will see your ideas move from concept to tested hardware, gaining hands‑on experience while making a meaningful impact on the reliability and safety of critical nuclear operations. If you’re motivated by learning, problem‑solving, and the opportunity to work on technology that makes a difference, this role offers a chance to see yourself as part of a team shaping practical solutions for a highly regulated and essential industry.

All students applying for student positions at CNL must be returning to full‑time studies upon completion of their work term. Exceptions will be made for students who require a work term to graduate.

What will you be doing!

Working Conditions:

• Working schedule: Five (5) days per week, seven and a half (7.5) hours per day for a thirty‑seven and a half (37.5) hour work week.
