Job summary

Canadian Nuclear Laboratories is seeking a Winter Student in Desktop Services Support to gain hands-on IT support experience across Chalk River and surrounding areas. You will help end users, respond to technical requests, and image and deploy computers for first use.

This 4-month, on-site position offers field exposure and mentorship from experienced technicians. Applicants must be enrolled in a related program, demonstrate strong communication, and document findings clearly.

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled at a university or college in Computer Science or related field.
  • Strong communication and customer service abilities.
  • Ability to identify root causes and craft effective solutions.
  • Comfortable documenting findings in tickets or knowledge base articles.
  • Reliable, accountable, and a collaborative team member.

Responsibilities

  • Follow safety requirements while working onsite.
  • Troubleshoot IT issues and provide timely resolutions.
  • Imaging and setting up computers for first use and deployment.
  • Decommission and retire IT assets in the IT lab.
  • Conduct field work under mentor guidance from CNL technicians.
  • Respond to IT incidents and service requests promptly.
  • Create, update and fulfill IT incidents and requests in ServiceCNL.
  • Maintain accurate IT asset management records and inventory.
  • Assist with other duties as assigned by your manager.

Do you enjoy troubleshooting technology issues and helping others stay productive? Can you see yourself providing hands-on IT support, resolving desktop-related challenges, and working with a team to deliver reliable service to customers across Chalk River and surrounding areas? As a Desktop Services Support Student, you will gain valuable experience supporting end users, responding to technical requests, and developing practical IT skills in a dynamic work environment. If you answered yes, then this may be the job for you!

All students applying for student positions at CNL must be returning to full‑time studies upon completion of their work term. Exceptions will be made for students who require a work term to graduate.

What you will be doing!
  • Following company procedures and safety requirements while working onsite.
  • Troubleshooting customer IT issues and identifying effective solutions.
  • Imaging and setting up computers for first-time use and deployment.
  • Decommissioning and retiring IT assets within the IT lab.
  • Conducting field work under the mentorship of experienced CNL technicians.
  • Responding promptly to customer IT incidents and service requests.
  • Creating, updating, and fulfilling ServiceCNL IT incidents and requests.
  • Assisting with maintaining accurate IT asset management records and inventory.
  • Other duties as assigned by your manager.
What we are looking for:
  • Education
    • Currently enrolled at a university or College of recognized standing in a relatable field such as Computer Science.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
    • Great communication skills to work with customers and peers.

    • Organized with ability to document findings in ticket notes or Knowledge Base Articles.

  • Security Clearance Eligibility Required
    • Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3-5 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat's “Standard on Security Screening” and the “Policy on Government Security.”
Working Conditions:
  • Working schedule: Five (5) days per week, seven and a half (7.5) hours per day for a thirty-seven and a half (37.5) hour work week.
