Canadian Nuclear Laboratories invites you to join our Winter Student Program in Library Services at Chalk River, on-site. This 4-month term offers hands-on experience in archival preservation, metadata, and collection management within a national laboratory setting.

Open to students in Library and Information Science or related fields, the role emphasizes careful handling of historical materials, documentation, and collaboration with a professional team across Canada.

Qualifications

  • Enrolled in a post-secondary program related to Library and Information Science or related field.
  • Demonstrated interest in information stewardship, preservation, archives, or collection management.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail when handling collection materials and records.
  • Follows procedures with high accuracy when updating records and metadata.
  • Works both independently and collaboratively within a team.

Responsibilities

  • Rehousing and organizing collections using archival best practices.

What you will be doing!
  • Conducting inventories and audits of the microfiche collection to support collection management and preservation efforts.
  • Assessing and documenting the condition of microfiche materials to identify preservation requirements.
  • Rehousing and organizing collections using archival and preservation best practices.
  • Updating metadata and collection records to improve discoverability and accessibility of materials.
  • Preparing materials and documentation to support future digitization and preservation projects.
  • Other duties as assigned by your manager.
What we are looking for:
  • Education Enrolled in a post-secondary program related to Library and Information Science, Library Technician, Information Management, or a related field.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Demonstrated interest in information stewardship, preservation, archives, or collection management.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail while working with collection materials and records.
  • Follows procedures accurately and maintains a high degree of accuracy when updating records and metadata.
  • Works independently while also collaborating effectively within a team environment.
  • Handles fragile historical materials with care and professionalism.
  • Brings familiarity with preservation principles, cataloguing, databases, or scanning equipment, which would be considered an asset.
  • Security Clearance Eligibility Required Reliability Status which has a minimum requirement of 3-5 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat's “Standard on Security Screening” and the “Policy on Government Security.”
Working Conditions:
  • Working schedule: Five (5) days per week, seven and a half (7.5) hours per day for a thirty-seven and a half (37.5) hour work week.
