Job summary

Hastings Deering is seeking a Leading Hand for our Mackay Workshop Operations team. You will supervise and support tradespeople and apprentices, coordinating daily tasks and ensuring safety and quality in our heavy equipment projects.

You’ll lead hands-on troubleshooting, allocate work, and communicate with stakeholders to keep major repairs on track. This is a permanent day-shift role with career stability and growth opportunities.

Qualifications

• Hold a relevant trade qualification in diesel, plant or heavy equipment.
• Proven leadership experience in a workshop or field setting.
• Strong technical knowledge of heavy equipment and mechanical systems.
• Excellent communication and organisation skills.
• Commitment to safety standards and quality workmanship.
• Overhead crane and forklift tickets are desirable but not essential.

Responsibilities

• Supervise and support the team – provide day-to-day leadership within the workshop.
• Allocate tasks and monitor workflow – assign daily work priorities and oversee progress.
• Provide technical guidance – hands-on troubleshooting and expert advice.
• Ensure safety compliance – uphold safety policies and procedures.
• Maintain quality control – ensure tasks meet required quality standards.
• Support training and development – coach and upskill apprentices and tradespeople.
• Lead toolbox meetings and culture building – promote a positive team culture.
• Coordinate with stakeholders and customers – update and support customers through major repairs.
