Job summary

Smile IT in Brisbane is seeking an experienced Senior Systems Engineer to join our Projects Team on a full-time basis. You will own the technical delivery of infrastructure and cloud projects from design through build, cutover and handover, mentoring peers along the way.

The role can be based at our Tingalpa head office or remote with client site visits across Southeast Queensland and occasional regional travel, working with modern tooling and a supportive, growth-focused team.

Qualifications

• 4+ years in a project engineering or infrastructure engineering role.
• Strong knowledge of Windows Server and virtualization.
• Microsoft cloud skills across Entra ID, Exchange Online, SharePoint, Intune and Azure IaaS.
• Strong networking including VLANs, switching, firewalls, wireless and VPN.
• Backup, replication and disaster recovery design with restore testing.
• Excellent communication and mentoring abilities.
• AZ-104 or AZ-800/801 or equivalent certifications.
• Experience in mining, resources or heavy-industry vertical.
• Exposure to OT/ICS network segregation and industrial environments.
• Familiarity with HaloPSA, IT Glue, NinjaOne, Acronis and UniFi.

Responsibilities

• Lead design and implementation of infrastructure and cloud projects, including servers, virtualization, storage, Microsoft 365 and Azure.
• Design and deliver supporting network infrastructure, including switching, firewalls, wireless and site-to-site VPN.
• Produce solution designs, network diagrams and bills of materials aligned with Smile IT standards.
• Plan and lead change windows, including occasional out-of-hours work where the client environment requires it.
• Engage with clients to gather requirements and develop scopes of work; pre-sales support with technical scoping and estimation.
• Troubleshoot and resolve complex issues during project deployments, remotely and on site.
• Peer review designs and builds before client delivery.
• Mentor junior engineers and act as the technical escalation point.
• Maintain accurate documentation and handovers into Service Delivery at project close.
• Keep time and project notes in our PSA for visibility.

An exciting new role has opened at Smile IT! We are searching for an experienced and motivated Senior Systems Engineer to join our Projects Team full time.

The role is primarily based out of our Tingalpa head office or remotely with client site visits across Southeast Queensland and occasional planned regional travel.

About the Role:

This is the senior technical delivery seat in our Projects Team. You’ll own the technical outcome of infrastructure and cloud projects from design through to build, cutover, handover and documentation - and you will lift the standard of the work around you through peer review and mentoring.

You’ll engage directly with clients to gather requirements, define scopes of work and deliver solutions aligned to Smile IT standards. Project scheduling and commercials sit with our Head of Projects, which means you get to focus on the technical delivery.

Key Responsibilities:

Lead the design and implementation of infrastructure and cloud projects, including servers, virtualisation, storage, Microsoft 365 and Azure.

Design and deliver supporting network infrastructure, including switching, firewalls, wireless and site-to-site VPN.

Produce solution designs, network diagrams and bills of materials that are practical, supportable and aligned with Smile IT standards.

Plan and lead change windows, including occasional out-of-hours work where the client environment requires it.

Engage with clients to gather requirements and develop scopes of work and support pre-sales with technical scoping and effort estimation.

Troubleshoot and resolve complex issues during project deployments, remotely and on site.

Peer review designs and builds produced by other engineers before they reach the client.

Mentor junior engineers and act as the technical escalation point for complex project issues.

Maintain accurate documentation and run structured handovers into our Service Delivery team at project close.

Keep accurate time and project notes in our PSA so delivery stays visible.

Stay up to date with emerging technologies and certifications relevant to the role.

Skills & Experience:

4+ years in a project engineering or infrastructure engineering role or similar equivalent (MSP or client-facing IT environment desirable).

Strong knowledge of Windows Server, virtualisation (Hyper-V/VMware), clustered server platforms and storage.

Strong Microsoft cloud skills across Entra ID, Exchange Online, SharePoint, Intune and Azure IaaS, including hybrid identity and migrations.

Solid networking capability - VLANs, switching, firewalls, wireless and VPN.

Backup, replication and disaster recovery design, including restore testing.

Demonstrated ownership of projects from design through to handover.

Excellent communication skills, with strong documentation, mentoring and organisational ability.

Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities effectively.

Microsoft certifications (AZ-104, AZ-800/801 or equivalent).

Experience in mining, resources or another heavy-industry vertical.

Exposure to OT/ICS network segregation and industrial environments.

Familiarity with HaloPSA, IT Glue, NinjaOne, Acronis and UniFi.

Prior mentoring or technical lead responsibility.

Additional Requirements

A valid Blue Card is desirable. In the absence of one, successful applicants will be required to undergo a police check.
