Job summary

Canva is seeking a Senior Software Engineer in the DevX group in Sydney, with a strong focus on backend developer experience and platform tooling. You will own critical infrastructure and developer-facing products used by Canva’s engineering teams, spanning Python and Java workloads.

You’ll collaborate across backend, platform, and infrastructure domains to optimize build, test, and deployment workflows, and to scale internal platforms.

Qualifications

• Experience building production backend systems, developer tooling, or internal platforms at scale.
• Strong hands-on programming in Python and/or Java.
• Experience with AWS or GCP and Kubernetes in production environments.

Responsibilities

• Design, document, and implement backend developer experience and infrastructure projects spanning multiple systems and language ecosystems.
• Drive projects from initial design to stakeholder buy-in, implementation, testing, rollout, and long-term operation.
• Build developer-facing tools and automation to reduce repetitive manual work.
• Improve workflows for Python and Java backend engineers across local development, IDEs, dependency management, builds, testing, CI/CD, and releases.
• Collaborate with backend, platform, and infrastructure teams to understand pain points and gather requirements.
• Use telemetry and feedback to prioritize improvements and evaluate impact, sharing knowledge through docs and talks.
