Job summary

Canva is seeking a Senior Software Engineer (Developer Tooling) to own backend infrastructure and developer-facing products for Canva's engineering teams. The role emphasizes Python and Java workloads, cross-team collaboration, and building scalable tooling across CI/CD, monitoring, and build systems.

You will shape developer experiences for thousands of engineers while operating in a hybrid Sydney-based setting.

Qualifications

• Strong background in Platform Engineering, Developer Experience, or backend software engineering with hands-on Python and/or Java.
• Proven track record building and operating production backend systems, developer tooling, or internal platforms at scale.
• Experience supporting large engineering organizations (1,000+ engineers).
• Strong experience with AWS or GCP.
• Thorough Kubernetes experience in production environments.
• Built and maintained CI/CD pipelines at scale (Buildkite, Jenkins, GitLab CI).
• Experience with Bazel, Gradle, or similar monorepo build tools (Bazel valued).
• Understanding of modern Python/JVM workflows (dependency management, testing, packaging, debugging, IDE integration).
• Implemented monitoring, logging, telemetry, and alerting.
• Proficient with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, Ansible, CloudFormation).

Responsibilities

• Own critical infrastructure and developer-facing products for Canva's backend engineers.
• Improve backend developer workflows and local/remote environments, IDE integrations, and builds.
• Build and maintain CI/CD systems, test infrastructure, release automation, and deployment safety mechanisms.
• Maintain source control systems and monorepo tooling (Bazel, code review infra).
• Deliver self-service platforms and tools to reduce friction for engineering teams.
