Job summary

Hitachi, Ltd. in Melbourne seeks a senior electrical engineer to deliver high‑quality HV solutions across complex projects.

You will lead design, testing, commissioning, drafting support, and site installation while providing technical leadership and mentoring to engineers and technicians. You will engage customers and contractors, prepare technical documentation, manage risk, and ensure safety, quality and contractual objectives are met.

Qualifications

• Degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.
• Minimum 5 years' experience with HV equipment, power substations and project delivery.
• Experience in electrical design, design coordination, SiD, constructability reviews, testing, commissioning, QA.
• Knowledge of Australian and international electrical standards (AS and IEC).
• Proficient in MS Office; able to read and interpret engineering drawings.
• Strong written and verbal communication with stakeholders.
• Analytical, problem-solving and commercial acumen.
• Ability to explain complex concepts to diverse audiences.

Responsibilities

• Lead electrical engineering activity across multiple projects, including design, review, testing, commissioning and drafting support.
• Provide specialist technical expertise and resolve complex issues with customers and project teams.
• Support proposals and tenders with BOMs, estimates, and technical documentation.
• Collaborate with Contract Managers on scope, risk, and contract compliance.
• Develop and manage project work plans, budgets, schedules, and deliverables.
• Identify and mitigate project risks and address quality, cost, schedule issues.
• Build relationships with customers, contractors, suppliers, and stakeholders.
• Promote best practices and continuous improvement in safety and quality.
• Mentor engineers and technicians; contribute to capability development.

Position Summary

This role is responsible for delivering high-quality electrical engineering solutions across complex projects, providing technical leadership, customer engagement, risk management, and project delivery support while ensuring safety, quality, and commercial objectives are achieved. The position also plays a key role in mentoring team members and supporting continuous improvement across engineering and project execution activities.

How you'll make an impact

• Lead and coordinate electrical engineering activities across multiple projects, including design, review, testing, commissioning, drafting support, and site installation.
• Provide specialist technical expertise, resolving complex engineering and quality issues while supporting customers, project teams, and manufacturing facilities.
• Support the preparation of project proposals and tenders through the development of bills of materials, engineering estimates, and technical documentation.
• Partner with Contract Managers to manage scope variations, claims, risk assessments, and contract compliance while delivering cost-effective solutions.
• Develop and manage project work plans, budgets, schedules, and engineering deliverables to ensure successful project execution.
• Identify, assess, and mitigate project risks and opportunities, providing recommendations to address quality, cost, schedule, and contractual issues.
• Build strong relationships with customers, contractors, suppliers, and stakeholders, representing the engineering team in project meetings and technical discussions.
• Collaborate with supply chain and procurement teams to define technical requirements, evaluate supplier proposals, and approve equipment and services.
• Drive engineering excellence by implementing best practices, ensuring compliance with safety and contractual requirements, and promoting continuous improvement.
• Mentor and support engineers, technicians, and project staff, providing technical leadership and contributing to capability development across the team.

Your Background

• Degree qualification in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
• Minimum 5 years' experience in High Voltage (HV) equipment, power substations, and electrical engineering project delivery.
• Demonstrated experience in electrical design, design coordination, Safety in Design (SiD), constructability reviews, testing, commissioning, and quality assurance.
• Strong knowledge and application of Australian and international engineering standards, including AS and IEC standards.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and the ability to read and interpret technical drawings and engineering documentation.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively engage customers, contractors, suppliers, and project stakeholders.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and commercial acumen with a results-driven approach.
• Ability to confidently communicate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
• Self-motivated, proactive, and adaptable, with a strong commitment to continuous improvement, safety, and quality.
