Job summary

CommBank is seeking a Staff Software Engineer for Payments Technology in Sydney/Melbourne. You will lead end-to-end design and delivery of secure, scalable payment platforms and APIs. The role focuses on cloud-native, event-driven architectures and AI-enabled engineering practices to support Australia’s largest bank.

You’ll mentor engineers, shape technical direction and collaborate with Product, Security and Operations to ensure reliable customer experiences at scale.

Qualifications

• Experienced software engineer with a track record delivering complex systems.
• Deep expertise across modern backend stacks, cloud-native engineering and distributed architectures.
• Ability to learn quickly and influence engineering direction across multiple teams.

Responsibilities

• Provide technical leadership across teams, influencing engineering direction, architecture and standards.
• Design, build and evolve secure, scalable and resilient software platforms and distributed systems.
• Lead architecture decisions and modernise platforms using cloud-native and event-driven approaches.
• Champion engineering excellence across software quality, testing, observability, security, resilience and operational excellence.
• Foster a strong DevSecOps culture by taking ownership from design through to production operations and continuous improvement.
• Mentor engineers, grow technical capability and promote AI-enabled engineering practices.
