Job summary

CommBank is seeking a Principal Software Engineer to lead hands-on engineering and platform enablement within the Business Banking technology environment in Australia. The role focuses on shaping standards, uplifting developer experience, and guiding teams to adopt modern delivery practices.

You will provide technical leadership across Everyday Business Banking, building practical solutions, strengthening platforms, and delivering secure, reliable outcomes at pace.

Qualifications

• Proven hands-on software engineering across platforms and services.
• Deep understanding of modern software delivery including DevSecOps and CI/CD.
• Experience designing, building and operating cloud solutions, preferably AWS.
• Experience with containers, platform runtimes, IAM and automated controls.
• Ability to explain technical strategy clearly and align diverse teams to outcomes.
• Collaborative, curious, and focused on uplifting engineering capability at scale.

Responsibilities

• Provide hands-on technical leadership and mentor senior engineers.
• Design, build and evolve platforms, tools, and reusable capabilities.
• Establish engineering standards, patterns, and guardrails for quality.
• Partner with squads to uplift engineering practices and adoption.
• Champion automation and AI-powered approaches across delivery lifecycle.
• Improve developer experience with self-service pipelines and templates.
• Collaborate with architecture, security, risk and data teams to align with standards.
• Strengthen observability, reliability, performance and cost optimisation.
