Job summary

SMC Corporation is seeking a Mechanical Draftsperson to provide accurate drafting and design support by preparing, modifying, and maintaining detailed drawings, 3D models, layouts and documentation.

You will work with Technical Design Engineers to translate concepts into manufacturable designs, ensuring drawings comply with Australian Standards and company requirements, while maintaining revision control.

Qualifications

• Relevant qualification in Mechanical Drafting (Cert IV or Diploma).
• Minimum 5 years’ experience as Mechanical Draftsperson in a manufacturing/industrial environment.
• Strong SolidWorks skills including 3D modelling, assemblies and 2D drawings.
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications.
• Experience producing fabrication and machining drawings; BOMs and revisions.

Job description

We have an opportunity for a talented Mechanical Draftsperson who will be providing accurate mechanical drafting and design support on time to Technical Design Engineers by preparing, modifying, and maintaining detailed engineering drawings, 3D models, layouts, and documentation. The Mechanical Draftsperson will work closely with Technical Design Engineers to translate engineering concepts into practical, manufacturable designs while ensuring drawings comply with relevant standards, specifications, and company requirements.

You’ll be Responsible for

Create and modify detailed 3D models, assemblies and mechanical drawings using SolidWorks or Autodesk Inventor.

Produce accurate manufacturing and fabrication drawings, including dimensions, tolerances, sections, details and BOMs.

Develop concepts into detailed designs suitable for manufacture and assembly.

Prepare and maintain Bills of Materials (BOMs) and drawing registers.

Interpret engineering specifications, sketches and concepts and translate them into production-ready drawings.

Review existing designs and drawings and implement engineering changes.

Work with engineers and workshop personnel to resolve design and manufacturing issues.

Liaise with suppliers and manufacturers where required to ensure designs are practical and achievable.

Assist with design improvements, standardisation and development of drawing and modelling standards.

Maintain accurate revision control and documentation.

Accurately maintain all CAD models meta data, organise and manage CAD libraries

Participate in design reviews and provide drafting and technical input to projects.

Ensure all work is completed accurately, efficiently and within project timeframes.

Quality Assurance

Ensure drawings and models comply with relevant Australian Standards, company procedures and engineering requirements.

Ensure that all drawings and technical documentation issued for production are of the latest revision level.

Maintain current knowledge of the company systems including location and content of technical documentation, work instructions and standards relevant to work requirements.

About You

Qualifications

Relevant qualification in Mechanical Drafting (Cert IV or Diploma) or a related discipline.

Experience & Background

Minimum 5 years’ experience as Mechanical Draftsperson in a manufacturing/industrial environment (essential).

Strong practical experience using SolidWorks, including 3D modelling, assemblies and detailed 2D drawings.

Strong understanding of mechanical design and manufacturing processes.

Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications and technical documentation.

Experience producing drawings for fabrication, machining and/or mechanical assembly.

Experience producing pneumatic circuit and electrical wiring diagram (preferred)

Good understanding of materials, fasteners, tolerances and manufacturing methods.

Experience working with PDM or other engineering document-management systems.
