Job summary

IDM Instruments in Hallam, Victoria seeks an experienced Design Draftsperson / Mechanical Designer to take projects from concept through to detailed design, procurement, manufacture and completion. You will work with the workshop, suppliers and sales team to deliver cost-effective engineering solutions.

You will manage drawings, BOMs and assemblies while applying manufacturing principles and practical problem-solving to ensure outcomes meet customer and production needs.

Qualifications

• Mechanical engineering qualification or related discipline.
• Minimum 5 years' experience in a mechanical design/drafting role.
• Proficiency with Autodesk Inventor 3D CAD or equivalent.
• Sound understanding of mechanical design and manufacturing principles.
• Experience producing detailed manufacturing and assembly drawings.
• Ability to interpret and develop BOMs and manufacturing docs.
• Experience with machining, sheet metal and assemblies.
• Knowledge of pneumatics, hydraulics, linear motion and automation.
• Excellent attention to detail and problem-solving approach.
• Strong organisation and communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Design and draft testing instruments, measurement machines and custom machinery from concept to completion.
• Produce detailed component and assembly drawings.
• Create and manage Bills of Materials (BOMs).
• Design and integrate machined components, sheet metal, pneumatics, hydraulics, linear motion and electrical systems.
• Perform design calculations and FEAs as required.
• Prepare hazard identifications and risk assessments.
• Develop inspection checklists and manufacturing documentation.
• Obtain and evaluate supplier quotations for parts and services.
• Schedule machining and assembly work in IDM workshop.

We are seeking an experienced Design Draftsperson / Mechanical Designer to join our team in Hallam. This is a hands-on and varied role suited to someone who enjoys taking a project from concept through to detailed design, procurement, manufacture, assembly and completion. You will work closely with our workshop, suppliers and sales team to develop practical, cost-effective engineering solutions that can be manufactured and delivered to our customers.

Key responsibilities

• Design and draft testing instruments, measurement machines and custom machinery from concept to completion
• Produce detailed component and assembly drawings
• Create and manage Bills of Materials (BOMs)
• Design and integrate machined components, sheet metal, pneumatics, hydraulics, linear motion, electrical and electronic systems
• Perform design calculations and, where required, FEA/stress analysis
• Prepare hazard identification and risk assessments
• Develop inspection checklists and manufacturing documentation

• Schedule machining and assembly work within the IDM workshop

About you
