Job summary

Join the Change for Youth Foundation as a Learning Support Mentor, and be part of the life-changing Empower Youth Program.

The Empower Youth Program provides intensive, one-to-one learning and wellbeing support to children and young people in out-of-home care who have experienced trauma and disrupted education. Delivered weekly in the home, the program is designed to accelerate learning, close curriculum gaps, and re-engage children with education.

As a Learning Support Mentor, you will work one-on-one with your assigned young people to provide consistent support and championing of their goals. Your sessions will focus on our four core competencies: literacy, numeracy, confidence, and school engagement. Each session is structured and individualised to rebuild foundational skills and support consistent engagement with the school curriculum. Before you begin working with any young people, we will provide you with comprehensive training in trauma-informed educational support, to scaffold your work with the tools and resources to give each child the best possible outcomes.

A key feature of this position within the Empower Youth Program is providing comprehensive, real-time weekly reporting that is shared with teachers, schools, carers, and the Department of Child Safety. Working within our connected model allows you to align your mentorship and support with the work of each young person’s wider team, creating a cohesive and comprehensive network of care. These evidence-based updates track progress, engagement, and learning outcomes, ensuring alignment and timely intervention.

Role Requirements

Term 4 Start

Consistent availability to attend scheduled learning support sessions at the same time each week.

Capacity for participation in fortnightly supervision, feedback, and support sessions with program manager via the phone.

4 Term minimum commitment through to 2027.

Capability to accommodate up to 5 students with 1-hour sessions each week, with additional time available for session summaries.

Experience as a youth worker or currently studying (third year or above) education, psychology, or a related field with strong maths and literacy skills and the confidence to mentor in maths and literacy up to Year 12. (Year 12 maths and literacy results are required to be included in applications).

Valid driver’s licence and access to a vehicle.

Current Blue Card (or willingness to obtain—support provided).

Availability Monday to Friday and occasional Saturdays during School Terms.

Ability to consistently complete session summaries using trauma-informed language within 12 hours of each session.

Excellent communication skills with a commitment to ongoing communication with carers and program managers.

Applicants must not be employed by or operate within another tutoring agency in order to maintain confidentiality and avoid conflicts of interest.

Experience working with young people in education or youth work settings.

Strong literacy and numeracy confidence aligned with the school curriculum up to Year 12.

Ability to support neurodivergent and trauma-affected children with patience and empathy.

Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Strong relationship-building skills with both young people and their carers.

Ability to work independently and plan structured sessions to help young people reach their maths, literacy and numeracy goals.

Psychology or education background highly regarded.

Two positive referees including a past employer.
