Job summary

selectability is seeking a Youth Mentor for the BikeShed Program in Rockhampton. The role focuses on mentoring at-risk youth through bike repair, cycling activities, and life skills workshops, with a view to fostering resilience and community ties.

You will engage with First Nations Elders in cultural sessions and support youths to navigate education, employment readiness, and broader community initiatives while maintaining child-safe, trauma-informed practices.

Qualifications

  • Experience working with disadvantaged youth preferred.
  • First Aid and CPR certificates current (or ability to obtain).
  • Positive Notice Working with Children (blue card) or ability to obtain.
  • NDIS Worker Screening Clearance or ability to obtain.
  • NDIS Worker Orientation Module completion or ability to obtain.
  • Current P1 "C" class Queensland driver’s licence.
  • Roadworthy vehicle with comprehensive insurance.

About the role

selectability is currently seeking an enthusiastic Youth Mentor to join our BikeShed Program—an initiative designed to empower at-risk youth. This is more than a mentoring role; it’s a chance to make a lasting difference in young lives through guidance, support, and skill-building.

The Youth Mentor will support after-school activities like bike repair, group cycling, life skills workshops, and cultural connection sessions with First Nations Elders. Through mentoring and peer support, you’ll help young people overcome challenges, reduce challenging behaviours, and steer them toward long-term success.

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Mentoring at-risk young people to engage more effectively with education, employment readiness programs, and broader community initiatives
  • Promoting and fostering stronger connections to family and community networks
  • Supporting young people to make positive life choices through consistent mentoring and engagement, particularly those who are disengaged or involved in the justice system
About you

To be considered for this rewarding role you will have:

  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritise conflicting priorities as required
  • Ability to work under minimal supervision with the capacity to exercise initiative in the application of work processes and procedures and establish objectives and outcomes
  • Demonstrated ability to show empathy and compassion
  • Proven ability to think critically and approach challenges with innovation
Role Requirements
  • Previous experience working with disadvantaged youth
