Westpac Group in Sydney is seeking a Lawyer/Senior Lawyer to join the Commercial Banking & Transactional Support Legal team on a 12-month parental leave contract. The role delivers practical, commercially focused legal advice to Distribution and Frontline teams across Australia.

You will be a versatile banking lawyer who acts as a generalist, handling a wide range of issues beyond large banking transactions, including regulatory obligations and lending documentation.

• 12 month Parental Leave Contract starting January 2027
• Full-time (1.0 FTE), with Part-time (0.8 FTE) arrangements also considered.

What’s the role?

An exciting opportunity has become available for an experienced Lawyer/Senior Lawyer to join our Commercial Banking & Transactional Support Legal team on a 12 month parental leave contract.

Your role is to provide practical, commercially focused legal advice to our Distribution businesses and Frontline teams across Australia, helping them navigate a diverse range of customer, banking, transactional and regulatory matters.

Rather than focusing solely on large-scale banking transactions or deal execution, this role is suited to a versatile banking lawyer who enjoys being a legal generalist, can think on their feet and is comfortable advising on a wide variety of issues as they arise.

You’ll support Commercial Banking, Regional Commercial & Agribusiness, SME & Small Business and Specialised Sales, responding to legal queries from bankers, product specialists, operations teams and branch staff nationally.

Key Accountabilities

• Provide practical legal advice across a broad range of commercial and business banking matters including powers of attorney, guardianship, estates, wills and probate, bank guarantees, account operation, PPSA, partnership lending, security structures and business lending documentation.
• Independently review and advise on transactions, lending documentation and strategic initiatives.
• Provide transactional support on lending matters, including facility agreements, security documents, conditions precedent, deal structuring and associated legal and regulatory considerations.
• Advise on regulatory obligations relevant to business banking, including areas such as the Corporations Act, ASIC Act, Design and Distribution Obligations, Unfair Contract Terms, Privacy, Banking Code of Practice and PPSA.
• Build strong relationships with bankers, product specialists, senior stakeholders and external legal providers, providing clear advice on complex legal issues.

What do I need?

• 8+ years PQE and admission as a solicitor in Australia with an unrestricted Australian practising certificate
• Strong commercial banking, business lending and/or financial services legal experience.
• Understanding of legal and regulatory obligations affecting business banking products and customers.
• Experience reviewing and advising on business/commercial lending, loan and security documentation., Exposure to Commercial Banking, SME/small business and agribusiness lending is preferred. Familiarity with specialist products such as trade, invoice or equipment finance will be highly regarded.
• Strong problem-solving and stakeholder management skills, with the confidence to provide clear, rational advice in a fast-paced commercial environment
• A broad legal background with the ability to move comfortably between different issues rather than specialising in only one type of transaction.
