Job description

Finished school? Want to start an IT career?

We're looking for someone at the beginning of their working life who's interested in technology, enjoys solving problems and wants an opportunity to learn IT by working in IT.

Not exactly jumping at the idea of spending the next few years sitting in another classroom? We get it.

If you've recently finished school, are into technology, good with people and would rather learn by actually doing the job, we might have the perfect place for you to start.

We're looking for an IT Support Trainee to join the Colton IT Support team in Orange.

  • You don't need an IT qualification.
  • You don't need years of experience.
  • You don't need to already know how to fix everything.
  • We'll teach you.

What we do need is someone who's curious, reliable, comfortable talking to people and genuinely interested in building a career in IT.

What will you actually be doing?

You'll be one of the first people our business clients speak to when something goes wrong with their technology in their own company.

You'll:

  • Answer incoming IT support calls
  • Listen to the problem and ask the right questions
  • Create clear support tickets for our technical team
  • Help with straightforward IT issues like password resets and account access
  • Help troubleshoot basic problems with computers, printers, monitors and other equipment
  • Learn which issues you can tackle yourself and which ones need an experienced technician
  • Get IT support requests into the right hands quickly
  • Learn from experienced IT technicians every day
  • Gradually take on more technical work as your skills grow

You'll probably reset a lot of passwords.

You'll almost certainly meet a bit of software or hardware that refuses to cooperate.

And you'll learn a heap about working in IT.

What else?

This role has been designed as a starting point, not a dead end.

If you're leaving school and thinking:

"I like technology, but uni really isn't for me."

That's completely okay.

You might learn better by doing, asking questions, watching experienced people and having a go yourself.

That's exactly what this role offers. You'll start with the foundations of IT support and build your knowledge through real-world experience.

After 12 months, you'll commence the Colton IT Trainee Program to continue developing your technical skills and work towards becoming a Level 1 Technician.

Your pathway could look like: IT Support Trainee -> Colton IT Trainee Program -> Level 1 Technician -> and onwards from there

Pay rate will be Junior rates under the Award (depending on age)
Who would be great for this role?

You might be:

  • Finishing Year 12 and wondering what comes next
  • Recently out of school and looking for your first career opportunity
  • Working in retail, hospitality or another junior role but secretly wanting to get into IT
  • The person everyone in the family goes to when the Wi-Fi isn't working
  • Someone who loves computers and technology but doesn't necessarily love classrooms and textbooks
  • Looking for a career where you can keep learning while you're working

We're much more interested in who you are and how you approach things than how impressive your résumé looks.

We'd love you to be someone who:
  • Enjoys helping people
  • Is confident having a conversation on the phone
  • Is curious and likes figuring things out
  • Has good attention to detail
  • Isn't scared to ask questions
  • Can follow instructions and documented processes
  • Is reliable and turns up ready to learn
  • Works well as part of a team
  • Is genuinely excited about building a career in IT

Sounds like you?

Everyone working in IT had to start somewhere.

This could be your somewhere.

If you've finished school, you're ready to start working full-time and you'd rather learn your IT skills through real-world experience, we'd love to hear from you.

Tell us a little about yourself, why technology interests you and why you reckon you'd be a good fit for the team.
