Job summary

St George Private Hospital is seeking an experienced Clinical Coder for a permanent, part-time role. You will assign accurate diagnosis and procedure codes for discharged patients, applying Australian coding standards to support funding, billing and reporting.

The role collaborates with Health Information Services, Finance and clinical teams, participates in audits, resolves coding queries and contributes to quality improvements and professional development.

Qualifications

• Completion of a HIMAA Clinical Coding Course or equivalent tertiary qualification.
• Eligible for HIMAA membership.
• Minimum 1 year of FTE coding experience post‑training, with casemix similar to the hospital.
• Ability to code independently with limited supervision.
• Commitment to professional development and mentoring.

Job description

We are seeking an experienced Clinical Coder to join our team at St George Private Hospital on a permanent, part-time basis.

About the Role

The Clinical Coder is responsible for the accurate and timely assignment of diagnosis and procedure codes for all discharged patients. The role applies current Australian coding standards to support high‑quality clinical data, activity‑based funding, billing, and reporting. The position works closely with Health Information Services, Finance, and clinical teams, contributes to internal and external coding audits, resolves coding‑related queries, and supports continuous quality improvement and professional development activities.

About You

• Completion of a HIMAA Clinical Coding Course; Associate Diploma or Bachelor of Applied Science, Medical Record Administration or Health Information Management; or a similar relevant tertiary qualification.
• Eligible for membership with the HIMAA.
• Demonstrated current experience in Clinical Coding, including a minimum of one year full-time equivalent (FTE) coding experience post‑training, with experience coding a casemix similar to that of the hospital.
• Demonstrated ability to code independently with limited supervision.
• Demonstrated interest in clinical coding, with highly developed self‑management skills and a positive, can‑do attitude.
• Excellent time management and organisational skills.
• High degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
• Ability to work effectively within a team environment and independently as required.
• Commitment to professional development through quality activities, constructive feedback and mentoring.
• Sound computer literacy and skills within the Microsoft Office Suite.
• Experience with hospital patient administration systems, such as Meditech (desirable).

Remuneration

On offer is a base hourly rate ranging from$44.73- $49.04+ superannuation based on experience level and qualifications, exclusive of penalties or allowances. (NSW QualifiedClinical Coder gr1-gr5)
