Job summary

Lake Macquarie Private Hospital is seeking an experienced Clinical Coder for a full-time, fixed-term role. The coder will assign diagnosis and procedure codes for discharged patients, applying Australian coding standards to support funding and reporting.

The role requires collaboration with Health Information Services, Finance and clinical teams across the Newcastle Network. The ideal candidate will have a HIMAA course or related qualification, eligibility for HIMAA membership, and at least 1

Qualifications

• Completion of a HIMAA Clinical Coding Course; Associate Diploma or Bachelor of Applied Science, Medical Record Administration or Health Information Management; or a similar relevant tertiary qualification.
• Eligible for HIMAA membership.
• Minimum 1 year FTE coding experience post-training, coding a casemix similar to the hospital.
• Ability to code independently with limited supervision.
• Commitment to professional development and high accuracy.

Job description

We are seeking an experienced Clinical Coder to join our team at Lake Macquarie Private Hospital on a full-time, fixed-term basis. The primary work location will be Lake Macquarie Private Hospital, with the requirement to work across other sites within the Newcastle Network as required.

About the Role

The Clinical Coder is responsible for the accurate and timely assignment of diagnosis and procedure codes for all discharged patients. The role applies current Australian coding standards to support high‑quality clinical data, activity‑based funding, billing, and reporting. The position works closely with Health Information Services, Finance, and clinical teams, contributes to internal and external coding audits, resolves coding‑related queries, and supports continuous quality improvement and professional development activities.

About You

• Completion of a HIMAA Clinical Coding Course; Associate Diploma or Bachelor of Applied Science, Medical Record Administration or Health Information Management; or a similar relevant tertiary qualification.
• Eligible for membership with the HIMAA.
• Demonstrated current experience in Clinical Coding, including a minimum of one year full-time equivalent (FTE) coding experience post-training, with experience coding a casemix similar to that of the hospital.
• Demonstrated ability to code independently with limited supervision.
• Demonstrated interest in clinical coding, with highly developed self-management skills and a positive, can-do attitude.
• Excellent time management and organisational skills.
• High degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
• Ability to work effectively within a team environment and independently as required.
• Commitment to professional development through quality activities, constructive feedback and mentoring.
• Sound computer literacy and skills within the Microsoft Office Suite.
• Experience with hospital patient administration systems, such as Meditech (desirable).
